Mysterious Magical Scepter

Post by anerausa »

Anera sits in the Library of Magic, reading carefully through a tome that outlines assorted theories on what ties spirits to the physical realm after the body has ceased to be. His scales reflect the torchlight as he finally stands and stretches. Looking towards the sun he realizes that he's been studying this tome for hours longer than he realized. Hissing a gently laugh he walks over towards a bookshelf to return the tome to it's place. As his clawed hand reaches towards the shelf to return the book, he notices a folded piece of paper sticking out just slightly from behind the books. He places the book down on the desk near him and reaches into the shelf to withdraw the paper.

The parchment is brown from age and clearly torn from another book. Looking over the manuscript ont he page, he realizes it is a piece of parchment torn what seems to be a journal. While he has spent many days during his life in this library reading the findings and notes from Magi of the past, he is unable to recognize this handwriting.

Day 126
Months of study have passed, the artifact still seems to radiate magic, but we still have not found exactly what causes it. When held in the light just so, the rock it is constructed from seems to glow blue from within. The heads of the paths of the Magi have been working endlessly to prepare their rites...

The ink on the pages has been smudged and the parchment has aged making he next section nearly impossible to read.

Day 205
The giant scepter has o..e again ..llen into the hands of the g...ts it is ..ing kept in their troph...oom. Rumors from the Moor c.aim it is .....ally hidden .... . path of white stones. The heather covered fields will guide to the sanc.... Guarded by the Champion .. the Sluagh. Hawthorne bushes mark the ent..ance.

The bottom of the page seems to have been preserved slightly due to the way the page has been folded.

Day 374
I still have had no luck finding the artifact. I am no longer able to search for it. Perhaps the rumors were lies. The one who took it from us has perished and none seem to be able to find his lair. Perhaps it is lost forever. Perhaps another will find it some day.

Tucking the page into his own Tome for further study, he makes his way out of the library and through the conservatory his mind rolling the writings over and his eyes beginning to dance at the thought of finding an artifact to study once again. He summons a young templar to contact the rest of the Magi and others who might be interested in finding this scepter the mage had been looking for long ago.

Tybras and I began our search in the northern moors, and took a detour through the Hermit's Forest looking for the scepter, we saw no sign of white stones, heather, or Hawthorne bushes.

We will resume our search as soon as we are available to move to the next location we have in mind.

Lamaenor practically falls onto the floor of the padded room in the Enchanters' Guild, heaving a sigh of exasperation. He shivers, rubbing his arms for warmth. He hadn't thought it would make such a difference, but the frigid city of Frostfall was much colder in the absence of the black cloak he usually wore.

Nearby, an occupant of the room struggles with the white jacket binding him and wails incoherently.

The tired elf rolls his eyes. "Oh, calm down Bartholomew! I was only gone but for a few days. I'm sure our weekly chess match can wait a few more hours while I recover from my journey...oh! Oh, of course! Where are my manners? Allow me to regale you with the tale of our foray into the deadly Roth Moor!"

The occupant 'Bartholomew' chews at the padded wall nearest him, but shows no signs of enthusiasm for the speech to come.

Lamaenor spreads his legs and kicks off his flip-flops. Much better. Those certainly didn't do much for keeping one warm, and the leather had started to chafe at his feet again. He would have to remember to replace those soon...

"Ah, yes...where to begin? Ah! The beginning, I suppose. Yes, well you see, I met up with Master Anera here in the guild halls and thus did we begin our plans for searching the treacherous and barren Roth Moor! He wished to leave as soon as possible, of course, but I needed to collect a few things from my office in Devardec first..."

'Bartholomew' groans and thrashes at his restraints, rolling his eyes. Whether in agony, or annoyance, or simply a result of a mad mind, it is hard to tell. But the Enchanter seems to take it as some sort of interjection.

"I am not a pack rat! I simply have many items which I...save for later usage. One never knows when they may come in handy! In fact, I will have you know that I found use for one such item on the very journey I am about to describe for you, if you will simply be quiet and listen! Now...where was I? Ah, yes! Devardec. You see, on my way to the office, I ran into a very...exuberant young fellow by the name of Glimmerside. After telling him about the artifact, he was keen to follow along. So, after some well-placed spells of protection on the young lad by Master Anera, we were off. As you know, the Roth Moor is far to the North. So we had quite a trek ahead of us. The young one almost walked straight past the test of Zir."

At this, the enchanter shudders and shakes his head. "Luckily for him, we were there to warn him. So! After reaching the Northern Reaches we headed West and through some tangled branches, we realized we were in the right place. You see, the residents of the Roth Moor use small white stones to denote their pathways, and practically the only plant able to grow in the frigid rocky terrain there is heather. Now, I don't know how familiar you are with the place, but it is quite vast. And believe it or not, there are those who actually live there. I gave my cloak to one such resident. Bad idea that was...and another needed some woodworking tools I happened to have on me at the time. Not being much of a carpenter myself, I was happy to part with them to aid a fellow person in need. But yes, Apart from the scattered residences it was a bleak, barren place, populated by many a wandering giant. We journeyed for almost the entire day. After making camp at a most peculiar stone circle (which I must return to investigate, by the way. It had strong magical properties), we resumed the next day and found a sort of...well, I'd say it was a crypt or barrow near some Hawthorne bushes (of these there were quite more than I expected). Well, having reached the barrow, we were at a sort of impasse. Master Anera was able to prove his worth to the ghost guarding the place, but I fear the young Glimmerside and I were found wanting. But! I can say with some degree of confidence that it is that very barrow which we are searching for! I have no doubt the scepter is inside. Alas, our party parted ways, but I do wonder if Master Anera has made any progress..."

The elf thinks on it for a moment then shrugs. He stands up and stretches for a moment before walking over to the nearby lockers. Upon opening his locker, several Items fall out harmlessly onto the padded floor, and he tosses further items items to the side as he rummages through it- a broom, several wands, an old telescope, the slightly-decayed wing of a giant mosquito.
"Ah, well. That is all I have to tell. But I must apologise! I have rambled on." A lump of chalk, a bleating lamb. "And I have delayed our match too long already! Now where did I put that chess board..." A lovely bouquet of wedding flowers, a walnut, a bloodied hammer, a white chess piece. "A-ha! Here we are. So! Will it be white or black for you this time?"

His green scales catch the candlelight of the library as reflections of the flickering flames bounce and dance. Anera continues pouring through tomes of ancient Magi, looking for any further mentions of the scepter or the studies once performed on it. Stacks and stacks of tomes and piles of scrolls begin to cover the desks and floors as he searches the shelves for any other loose scraps of paper that might have been tucked away in the back. While exploring with Lamaenor and Glitterside, they had found an area that seemed to have fit the description, but had not found the chambers themselves. Tybras had sent word that he might have found a lead too, but he had yet to manage to meet him in person. Sighing with frustration, he leans low towards the floor holding a candle in his hand, the flame begins to dance more quickly and with a start, the Enchanter remembers something that he'd long forgotten. Pushing the bookcase aside, a passage opens into a dark tunnel leading into Lord Sidney's old office.

"I'm sure there might be something in here that I haven't seen yet. Maybe something in the records kept here will give me the information that I need to find the cavern."

Settling in for another long session of study, Anera begins thumbing through the records kept by the leader of the path of Sorcery from years past.

Gathering his possessions for a journey, Anera is joined by Roin as they prepare to set off to the Northern Moor. Notes on possible locations gathered from Lamaenor, Glimmerside, and Tybras on one page, another page in the Anera's Tome of Wonder has been filled with notes regarding a rune that might open the path to the scepter. The two enchanters pass through the moor, stepping in shallow pools of algae and moss. The Lizard man pulls up his robes as they near a hawthorne bush. He looks at the Tome once more carefully before tracing the rune onto the ground. A large crown resting atop a chain. The rune glows briefly before dimming. Hissing with frustration the mage steps away and the two continue their journey through the moors, staying near the heather filled flatlands. As the pair pass a ghostly figure, another hawthorne bush can be seen in the distance. Approaching the hawthorne bushes closely, the mage looks over their twisted branches. He takes a deep breath, the air whistling between his teeth as he bends over tracing the rune into the ground once more with his clawed finger.

As the Master Enchanter, Anera, traces his rune, it glows bright in color, filling the area.
The rune grows in intensity, causing many in Roth Moor to shield their eyes.
With a bright FLASH the light disappears...
The rune returns to it's prior state, having yielding passage to the item the Enchanter seeks.

The Saurian enters the passage leading to a giant cavern filled with treasures and spoils of war. In the middle of the room rests an altar covered with runes of protection. Likely the runes that had kept the cavern hidden for so long. Resting on the altar a huge scepter rests. Crafted from dark grey labradorite, the scepter glows blue and green when the light hits the large symbol of power. The small framed Saurian casts a spell of strength on himself before picking the scepter up. Looking over the scepter, the Magi speaks to Roin
"It must have some sort of enchantment or power for the Magi to have been studying it, what magic do you think it contains?"

Shrugging, Roin promised to send any who might have a clue to the guildmaster before setting off.

Anera holds the scepter in his hands as he leaves the cavern, curious to unlock the power of the artifact.

Birds chirp as they rest and nest in the trees of the courtyard in the Crystal Castle. A large scepter carved from Labradorite rests on a small pedestal. The sun reflects from the crystal courtyard causing rainbows to shine across the surface of the scepter causing it to radiate hues of blue and green. Laid out around the pedestal are piles of tomes and scrolls. Anera holds a page of notes in his hand where bits of incantations and runes have been marked, scratched out, adjusted and rewritten multiple times. The saurian approaches the scepter holding the paper in front of him, takes a deep breath, then stops abruptly before turning to his collection of tomes once more. He holds his parchment next to a tome comparing the two carefully before approaching the scepter once more.

Holding out his clawed hand, the Enchanter begins muttering a magical phrase under his breath and begins tracing a rune in the air with his other hand. As he completes the casting, he slides the paper into his pouch and picks up his staff. He leans forward and swipes the staff through the air near the rune causing it to seemingly implode, the light and rainbows reflected from the crystal begin to draw into the symbol. As the rune begins to absorb the energy in the room, the papers begin to whirl and fly around. The runes on the scepter glow briefly before they darken once more. Letting out a long frustrated hiss, the mage swipes his staff through the air once more. With a loud crack the air is still once more.

Slowly, the papers drift back down to the floor and the birds resume their chirping. With a whirl of his robes, Anera turns to his notes and strikes one spell off of a list. The scepter remaining a mystery.

Kneeling in the small clearing, Anera places the giant scepter carefully on the ground. Croaking frogs and the buzz of insects fill the air. The nearby marshlands teemed with life. Grass and vines covered the ground and climbed up the few stones that littered the area.

Stepping back, he took a deep breath, allowing the warm humid air to fill his lungs. The wetness in the air felt great on his scales. For this visit, he had left many of his scrolls in his offices, not wanting them to get damaged by the wet air. He pulled out his single page of notes and carefully studied them before placing them back into his robes.

He slowly begins to walk around the clearing. The scepters weight begins to cause it to sink lower into the ground. He raises his arms over his head and begins to slowly trace a pattern in the air. At the conclusion of the pattern, he hisses a spell as his tongue flickers in and out of his mouth quickly. Slowly the vines of the ground begin to crawl and shift wrapping their way around the mysterious Labradorite scepter. Their strength reinforcing each other as the object is lifted from the ground. Leaves begin to whirl and dance around the clearing. Thorns suddenly erupt from the vines, long sharp thorns, clearly not normally seen on the vines such as this. The vines contract and writhe dragging the thorns across the surface of the scepter. The scepter's magical enhancements simply snap each thorn off as it drags across the labradorite. In a blue and green flash of light, the scepter begins to glow, burning the vines, causing them to dissolve quickly. The scepter falls to the ground once more.

The Enchanter strides towards the scepter, picking it up once more. With a hiss of frustration and a frown, the mage disappears with the scepter. Still the power of the artifact was hidden from him.

A loud humming fills the air of the underwater caverns. The air displaces in the cavern as a small portal opens. A lizard enters the cavern through the portal, his tongue flickering in and out as his eyes scan the room. In one of his hands, he holds the large scepter. His other holds his pouch. Summoning his magic into a rune that he traces over the ground, a spike of earth slowly raises providing the Enchanter with a place to rest the scepter upon. Gently setting the labradorite scepter on the newly created shelf, he sets his pack upon the ground. As the mage begins rifling through the pack, the humidity of the caverns creates a dewy layer over his scales. He withdraws a rune from his pack and places it near the shelf carefully. Then he pulls out his Tome of Wonder from the pack and turns to some of his more recent notes and ideas. Standing up to his full height once more, he takes a few steps back, his tail flicking back and forth briefly as he reads over the page carefully. Satisfied he slowly nods his head.

He begins walking slowly around the shelf and the rune on the ground. His focus becomes intent as he begins gathering and summoning the forces around him. His footsteps leave ripples in the shallow water as the minnows and other small creatures swim away quickly. The air in the cavern begins to cool slowly. At first almost unnoticeable, but within moments, the lizard's breath emerges as a cloud. Reaching down he taps his clawed finger against the ground and shards of frost erupts like a snowflake growing larger and larger as the pools of water in the cavern flash freeze. Drawing himself to his standing position he gazes into the ice seeing a minnow frozen as it tried to flee.

Turning his attention back towards the shelf with the large scepter resting on it he shuffled towards the rune he had earlier placed so carefully. As he shuffles forward slowly, his robes swirl around his feet as his feet glide across the ice. He gestures towards the rune and it begins to glow filling the icy cavern with light. Magical energies seem to palpably crackle in the air. With a blinding light the rune flashes causing the Saurian to blink his eyes and hold his sleeve over his face to try to adjust to the change in light. The room's ambiance returns to normal once more, but at the foot of the altar, the rune seems to strobe with energy. Looking down at his feet, he hisses with excitement. His robes are once more sitting in the water.

The Rune had successfully absorbed the cold energy that had filled the room only moments earlier. Anera reaches behind his back and pulls the Master Enchanter's staff from its place there, and gently touches one end of the staff against the scepter, holding his breath, he touches the other end of the staff against the rune. The Rune and the staff both being to strobe together acting as a magical conduit, focusing the energy and cold that had filled the room moments ago into the scepter. The rune on the ground shatters suddenly as ice crystals begin forming across the surface of the rock scepter.

Raising a fist in the air, the mage cheered triumphantly
"AHA! Finally something that seems to affect the thing!" Leaning over towards the scepter, he begins to eye it carefully inspecting every inch of the scepter. He glances into his pack pulling out a page of parchment to make new records of his experiments. He returns his gaze to the scepter sitting on the shelf...only now a puddle of water on the ground where the shelf had been raised, and the scepter once more in it's natural state. It had indeed rebutted yet another sort of magic. Kicking the broken rune pieces across the cavern, the Guild Master picked up the scepter and summoned another portal. With a gentle wooshing sound the portal appears and the mage steps through it before the portal closes behind him, leaving the cavern once again slowly dripping water from the stalactites onto the ground.

The Erilaz of Magic pulls from his pack a pouch of stones, each one with a different rune carved deeply in the rocks. He casts a spell of strength giving him the necessary muscle it takes to lift the heavy stone scepter. Gathering the pouch and the scepter he opens a portal and steps through it. With a displacement of air, the lizard man appears far away from the Crystal Castle in the skies that is the Temple of Magic. A loud buzzing fills he air as he blinks his eyes for a moment, adjusting his vision to his new surroundings. Overhead, large wasps can be seen flying through the skies, their wings rapid movement the source of the buzzing sound. Once again he nears a portal and steps through it. This time, the lizard man appears in a magical plane, the heat from which seems to instantly dry his scales out. Flames seem to pour from every surface around him. His tongue flickers in and out of his mouth as he begins to acclimate to the heat.

With a deep breath, he moves forward, the flames giving off palpable magical energies. Finding a crest of a hill that almost resembles a plateau overlooking the rolling flames of the Plains of Fire, he nods his head before taking off his rune covered vestments to allow his scales to breathe a little easier. Carefully he lays the scepter on the hill and prepares the next rite.

So far the scepter had been resilient, refusing to reveal it's power. He had tried using ice and water magics, nature magics, even energy draining magics, all with no progress made. This day he would try yet another spell energy, flames.

Reaching into his pouch of runes, he carefully lays the stones around the scepter. Some of the runes were used to summon flames, others to intensify the flames, others to release the fire used in forging weapons into magical enchantments, and a few were used to make oneself in-tune with the flames so they were less likely to burn.

Stepping back from the scepter and the runes surrounding it, the Master Enchanter takes a look at the rite once more, ensuring he is pleased with the preparation. Stepping forward, he moves a few of the small runestones around. Finally, he pulls his staff from his back and begins to chant the phrases that he had mastered long ago. Fire was after all the first element he had mastered in his youth. With a flash he remembered he first time he had accidentally summoned flames and burned down the merchant's shop. That was the day he left to find someone to help him gain control of his powers, and that was the day he set off for Frostfall to join the Enchanter's guild.

As he chants his staff begins to glow, the words carved into the surface beginning to shine brightly. He takes a step to the runestone nearest his feet and takes a deep breath before slamming the base of the staff onto the runestone. As he does, flames erupt from the ground under each one of the stones. The intense heat causes Anera to take a few steps back and raise his arm against his eyes, The bright fires cause his Saurian pupils to contract even as he tries to watch the spell to completion. As the flames shoot into the sky, they begin to swirl and leap higher and higher forming what could be described as a Vortex or a Tornado of flames. The Scepter begins to levitate slowly in the air, the iridescent blue greens of the Labradorite beginning to glow brightly. The flames begin to lick the scepter as they flicker and swirl, but as each flame touches the rock, the scepter seems to absorb the energy until the flames disappear. With a loud thump, the scepter falls to the ground once more.

Cursing loudly, his wheezing and hissing voice echoing through the Plains of Fire, the Priest gathers his components and the scepter once more, which was oddly cool to the touch before turning the ring on his finger, bringing him back to the realm he had so recently left.

Tybras sits on the floor with a multitude of tomes, books, and scrolls chaotically arranged on the floor of the Temple Library. Hastily scribed notes on old parchment scatter the area immediately beside him. His fingers glide through his beard while he intently focuses on a page of notes in his hand.

"Time magic can be very...dangerous indeed but still controllable and quite useful if used in a safe way I'd wager. The question is how to control it properly..."

After joining the Magi, Tybras had devoted countless hours to the study of magical incantations. Priest Ravon, Priest Aoveron, and Priest Anera had all provided valuable lessons on the different schools of magic, including Sorcery, Naturalism, and Wizardy. While defensive and healing spells had been a priority for Tybras in his very younger years he had his sights in a new direction : time magic.

He gathers a pile of his notes, and trudges to a smaller room in the temple where three other magi were waiting. He waves at them to follow.

Once they arrive at the chamber where the Scepter is held the three Magi form a circle. They begin chanting incantations invoking the primal elements as their eyes change colour. After a lengthy invocation, the first Magi gestures towards the direction of the scepter as it is enveloped in flame. The second Magi gestures and icicles form and shatter around it. The third Magi (being less experienced than the others) grunts and swipes at the scepter causing a flurry of lighting arcs to pulse through the scepter.

Tybras steps forward and begins reading from the page of notes in his left hand. His brow furrows as he concentrates deeply to ensure he pronounces each and every word correctly. Once complete, he gestures at the scepter... and...nothing happens.

Yes. Nothing.

After a long pause, the dwarf scoffs and quickly begins to consider an alternative solution. Yes, he did not consider the possibility that he would fail so miserably. Much to his surprise, however, soon a loud *BOOM* echoes throughout the chamber and a sphere of magic slowly envelopes the Scepter (and associated magical effects).

"Finally", grumbles the Dwarf, " this had better work!"

He shields his eyes with his right hand as he struggles to watch the lighting rapidly arc through the scepter over and over, while icicles shatter almost as quickly as they are formed. The fire burns so rapidly that it is difficult to see properly. After several minutes, the bubble dissipates, and all the magic within the sphere stops.

The scepter remains unchanged, save the scorch marks left from the heat of the fire.
