Unacceptable

Post by Kollin Byrne »

"But Sir...the Chancellor was pleased!

Ah spose thas another way ya can tell me apart from him, along with ma armor an ma hair.

Your accent too.

The other guards winced as the slower among them chimed in, his eyes going wide as he realized that his thought went past his lips.

Kollin did his best to bore a hole through the guard's head with his eyes. No, today he was not remotely amused. Today, he'd learned that these so called "guards" he was in charge of had brutally slaughtered a bandit during a maneuver. A bandit better captured for questioning. It seriously made him question the training, commitment, and sanity of some of those supposedly under his command.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence, Kollin spoke slowly and softly. “Here’s wha’s ta happen. Ya will go ta tha wall, an ya will dispose o the bodies in a proper manner. There’s a litany o health, safety, an security reasons why...an thas before we get ta ma personal feelins on tha matter. Should anyone give ya problems, ya send them ta me.

Yes Sir.

Ahm no finished!” Kollin glared at each of them, pausing a moment before continuing at his previous tone. “Ya will then go ta tha temple o tha gods, an ya will make sure tha place is clean. Ya will beg forgiveness for desecratin holy ground, an ya will do whatever es asked of ya there.

Having wisened up a bit, the four remain silent.

Once yer done, ya will be escorted, an confined ta tha barracks ...until ah decide whas next..an trust me, this es jus tha beginning. Es tha clear?

Yes Sir!

Go.

The four left under escort, leaving Kollin alone in the office. “We’re supposed ta be better than this,” he muttered to himself as he looked through his notes. Statements taken during each of the interviews he conducted with all of the guards involved in the operation. He paced for a moment before taking a deep breath and opening the door. Next on the list was the guard who by all accounts led the attack into the temple.

Send him in.

I don’t understand the problem. He was an enemy. We killed him. We aren’t knights.

An don I know it! Ah spose no bein a Knight makes it okay ta murder an unarmed, or at best an under armed man inside ah temple!

Murder? Really?” the guard smirked.

Les forget ma “personal code” for a moment. Tha goal o this operation was ta gather intel. Ta catch them off guard, an capture one o em. An when ya came across a signal scout, who ya outnumbered 5 ta one, ya decided he was too great a threat ta live?

...I didn’t know…

Kollin raised his hand and cut him off. “Ya said tha when ah questioned ya earlier. Ya know, out o evraone involved, an ah mean evraone, no jus tha five o ya who went in there,...yer tha ONLY one who claims ta na know tha. So tha question is...are ya inept, insubordinate, or treasonous?

Kollin raised his eyebrows awaiting an answer from the guardsman, who had begun to stammer something about the bandits being driven back.

Allow me ta enlighten ya... Let me help ya undertand tha problem as ya put it.

Tha fact tha a caravan was ta enter tha city in tha direction seems ta have been known by the bandits, but no tha it was false an filled with guards. Things appeared to be lookin good as tha bandits started to scatter, when ya decided ta enter tha temple an kill tha obvious asset who coulda provided a wealth o knowledge ta us. But instead o tha, ah only get another bloody piece o cloth with tha bandits sigil upon it!

Kollin exhales sharply and narrows his eyes.

Because o yer actions, we’ve los the element o surprise. Yes we scattered them, but there will be more an they’ll expect somethin on each raid. Ya have personally increased tha danger o travelin the roads. Are ya startin ta see tha problem yet? Because there’s more.

On top o tha, tha bandits had archers in Spirehold! Spirehold! And ma guards stationed there havena had any answers. Guess who ahm bringin in here next, an wha ah’ll be askin em about.

The guard starts to stammer again but Kollin doesn’t listen. He sighs and begins to talk over him with a wave of his hand.

Ahm done listening ta ya fer now, an this es all ah have left ta say. Ah truly hope ya didna intentionally sabotage this mission, but know this: Should ah find out ya did, ma personal code will no stop me from carrying out tha sentence tha comes with treason. Ah will take no joy in it, but ah’ll no hesitate either.

Kollin takes the guard by the arm and leads him to the door and motions for one of his personal guardsmen to come over.

Take him ta a cell. He’s ta have no contact with anyone but ya, maself, an anyone else ah personally bring ta ya. Ah’ll relieve ya with someone at change.

Yes sir.” The guardsman saluted and led the former guard to jail.

Kollin stood in the doorway and watched them walk away, the former guard protesting but not resisting. He wasn’t sure yet if he was working with the bandits. He hoped he’d find out more as he got to the bottom of the Spirehold portion of his investigation.

Kollin looked up from the reports on his desk and leaned back in his chair, stretching a bit as he stared across the room. It was late, and the office was dark save for the light of a few flickering candles upon his desk.

The investigation into the lack of Spire hold guards during the east coast road incident was at an end for now. The patrol schedules for the day did not include any for the road towards the village, and the gate captains were suspiciously absent. All in command found themselves in cells awaiting further questioning. Beyond being done with Devardec, he wasn’t sure what their fate would be as of yet. The position’s would have to be filled sooner than later, and a good number of troops would need to be retrained, more than he had originally thought. For now he would send some of his personal guardsmen to take over. He knew they could be trusted.

Kollin pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed as he leaned forward to look over the roll of names before him : A list of guards he would be sending to the Academy in Abrams’ Landing. Next to each name a symbol was drawn designating why they are being sent, and what type of training they were to receive. He nodded to himself as he double checked, stopping at one name on the list, and adding a slash to one of the symbols. It would be sent to the Commander of the Landing in the morning, and the troops would follow soon after.

One less thing ta do” he smirked sealing the roll and putting it aside.

Kollin went back to staring into the darkness of the office, watching the candlelight flicker against the bookshelves. His mind had moved onto the the bandit problem. With the latest report of a bandit taking its own life to escape capture, he wasn’t so sure bandit was the proper term. It seemed like an extreme reaction to being cornered, and they were more organized than the usual roadside thieves. This was something bigger than just bandits, he was sure of it.

Then there were the rumors and tips that came across his desk, some credible, some not so much. Mention of the sewers was the most constant. Reports of an injured person crawling out, or someone might have seen bandits escape into them after an attack. The idea of them having a hideout under the city was enraging, however he would not rush in blind. He had eyes on the sewer access points in the city, and would hopefully have what he needed to finalize his plan soon.

But for now he had done all that he could. Further thought or planning at this hour would only bring more frustration. He stood and nodded absently to himself as he cleaned up his desk and extinguished the candles. He would rest for a few hours, hoping new clarity would come with the dawn.

Return to “Devardec”
