A day in the tunnels

Post by Rumor Mill »

Sweat ran off their brows as shadows danced upon the walls. Each shadow depicted an ax clanging into the hard stone burred beneath the surface. A soft melody was hummed as the group of six neared the end of their day. The groups pace had slowed as they looked forward to coming to the surface and breathing in the fresh air. As one of their pick ax struck a large rock, it gave way and crumbled to the floor. As the rubble fell a rush of cool air flooded the tunnel. The air struck the dwarves in the face, which abruptly stooped their work.

One of the group moved toward the rock wall, and held a lantern toward the hole. As the flame from the lantern illuminated the rock face, they could tell it was not a naturally formed wall. Anticipation and wonder rushed over the group of six, wondering what could be behind the wall. Pick axes in hand they swung with all of their might as the wall begun to fall.

After a short period of time, a hole had developed large enough for a dwarf to squeeze through. They all stood staring at each other, waiting for a brave dwarf to volunteer themselves. Finally one of them spoke up and made their way through the hole.

Upon entry, the dwarf found a simple wooden chest. There was no lock placed upon it or markings of any type. He gently picked up the chest and passed it through the hole to the others. The group stood staring at the chest as their friend squeezed his back into the tunnel. The six stood in a circle as one of them slowly opened the lid....

Inside the chest there was just a simple scroll with a red seal only one of them had seen before. The eldest dwarf uttered a simple yet renowned name as he picked it up.

A bit nervous, he pulled at the wax seal as it gave way to his small stubby fingers. He unraveled it as the others held up their lanterns for light.

Their eyes danced across the scroll, which was brief and too the point.

Waiting for the entire group to finish reading, finally one of the smaller spoke while tugging at his beard with his free hand.

"I know this dwarf!"
he shouted. The firm tone of his voice echoed through the tunnels as other groups of miners headed toward the surface.

With the eyes of the other 5 locked upon the youngest dwarf, he smiled in relief.

"The true heir of Stone Keep has been discovered."
he said softly, attempting to hold his composure.

With that the group replaced the scroll in the chest and made their way to the surface. No doubt to speak of their findings over the a glass of lager... or five.
