HISTORY
OF THE
THIEVES' GUILD

Take the time to ask and learn about
those that came before you.
The Guild has a very rich history that
is there, just waiting for you to ask about
Gremil

Scribed by Duke Badon, Lord of Spire Hold in the Year 443

With thanks and credit to those who shared memories and helped check details:
Southbound, Jaimie Lachlan, the Ghost of Jesori, Lord Silk, Velvet, Jericho and Veshar
Much of our history is lost, as given the nature of this Guild, detailed records have not been kept of certain deeds, lest they end up in the hands of the authorities. Nevertheless, it is considered important to learn something of our past, to hear the names and deeds of those who came before and whose shoulders we now stand upon. Be warned though, Thief – do not reveal these details scribed here outside of our Order. Those breaking trust with the guild risk being found washed up in Tranos Harbour with a knife in the back as a warning to others...

The First Guildmaster
Kestanan
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GL: Gothic
We are Thieves to which none can stand,
Our poisons deadly to any man,
So hear us, all, throughout the land,
Tonight we ride for Kestanan!

Ancient folk song; composer unknown.

The history of the Thieves Guild can be traced back to the Age of Creation, where our organisation has its shadowy origins. At the time the dark mage Oltravar had established himself as ruler of the city of Tranos and seemed content to let the more 'fringe' elements of society rule the criminal underworld. Within Tranos, those of a more independent, acquisitive and harsher nature naturally gravitated together. Those who did not chain themselves with such outmoded concepts as honour, loyalty and truth found a degree of fellowship in mixing with those of similar values. It was in this environment that the Guild of Thieves was formed – the eldest of the three shadow walking guilds.

By its very nature, the Guild of Thieves is one of a group of independent, free-thinking individuals. That said, in line with the other elder guilds, the Thieves elected a Guildmaster to help set the direction for the order, with the appointment of Kestanan as its first GM; and Gothic as his lieutenant. Kestanan's original leadership and vision set the course for the Guild so that for almost half a millenia the Thieves Guild has dominated the criminal undertakings across Norland. It was during this age that the Creator, Deori, regularly walked the realm, as energy and excitement coursed through the lands as the first legends arose. Pursuit of fame, riches and adventure was the order of the day.

None embodies this pursuit of fame more than Kestanan himself whose deeds are enshrined within the lore of the land. Approaching the doors of destiny, Kestanan attempted to pick the lock to the mystical doors... listening carefully to the locks tumblers, his fingers testing the tension of the lock – he was disturbed by the Knight Jupiter. Despite Jupiter's attempt to stop him, with a final 'click' the doors of destiny opened and both Knight and Thief tumbled through the portal... Kestanan ascending as Immortal of Shadows, Thievery and the Night; while Jupiter emerged as the Immortal of Justice. Kestanan's rein as GM ended upon his ascension at which point Gothic succeeded him as Guildmaster.

The Second Guildmaster
Gothic
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GL: Lonewolf2
There are 24 ways to kill a man with a
toothbrush, and Gothic knew them all
Edward Fox

Having aided Kestanan in building the foundations of the Thieves Guild, Gothic was well prepared for leadership and the Guild of Thieves truly thrived. Gothic was already a well respected leader, to the point of even being feared by some. With Kestanan now acting as the Thieves Patron, the future looked golden. Alas, in a guild that promotes ambition and pursuit of glory and wealth, history now records him as a divisive figure. Some elder thieves talk of betrayal, while others give a wry smile and ask 'wouldn't you have taken the same opportunity?' Either way, Gothic left the Guild, heading northward to Frostfall to help establish the order of Assassins. The Assassins were more focused on the darker arts of thievery; and at the time, many flooded towards the newer Guilds of Frostfall given their potential. Given his contributions to the Thieves and the legendary mark he left on the realm of Terris as a whole, Gothic remains one of our most famous former members – immortalised upon the Assassins highest guildtitle as 'Gothic's Chosen'.

The Third Guildmaster
Lonewolf2
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GLs: Valan; Jynx; Ferret
This was the start of a golden age,
well, for me at least...
Southbound

The loss of Gothic and the rise of the Assassins was of course a huge event and whatever leader the guild chose to replace him had their work cut out to fill the void. What might be considered a poisoned chalice of a role fell in the end to Lonewolf2, who the membership of the Thieves elected as the third Guildmaster. While other guilds had suffered after the loss of a legendary figure, Lonewolf2 proved himself a steady hand at leadership. Indeed, the transition of power from Gothic to Lonewolf2 continued quite smoothly; testament to his lead of the Guild.

While the first legends of the realm began to emerge during this time, it should be noted too here, that conditions were much tougher during this 'golden age'. The highest level one could aim for was level 35, at which point one was deemed a 'Legend'. The highest weaponry available to a Thief was at Guild Level 19; and the highest skill shop at Guild Level 30. Compared to these days, where armour, weapons, resurrections and gold are freely available – those reaching the heights of 'Legend' had truly earned such an honour.

Despite the guild shop offering weapons and armour, most Thieves actually aspired to own instead, a piece of black mithril armour. The God of War, Zir, had granted the gift of forging to mortals and a set of mithril armour was the prized possession of many a Knight or Warrior. However, black mithril remained the sole provision of the shadow-walking Guilds. Black mithril was awarded to members of the guild upon completion of notable quests; rather than purchased from the guild shop. Those found selling on the amour or gifting it to outsiders were subject to punishment – the most harsh of which was removal from the Guild. While modern forging techniques have rendered black mithril less desirable than it once was, it is still awarded to Thieves to this day in recognition of notable deeds; and the punishment for granting it to outsiders still stands.

As for Lonewolf2, he was a natural mentor and acted as a role model to a new wave of Thieves whose names now echo through the ages, such as Protean, Southbound and Devatar. Unfortunately during the latter half of his term as GM, other duties demanded his attention and much of the day to day administration fell to one of his GL's; the now legendary thief Valan, supported in turn by the other two GL's; Jynx and Ferret. Given the start of the golden age that Lonewolf2 oversaw and the good reputation he left behind, he is honoured with his name recorded as one of the shopkeepers of our Guild. Due to his popularity and the legacy he left behind, it is no accident that he is sited at the prime position above Tranos Square.

The Fourth Guildmaster
Valan
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GLs: Corin; Jynx; Southbound; Devatar
"I'm not afraid of the dark, because that's where I live..." Valan

During Lonewolf2's final term, Valan was relied heavily upon in running the guild; but it should be understood – he was already a legendary figure in his own right. When commoners outside our Order thought of the Thieves, the name of Valan was spoken of – like Sylvanna of the Rangers, or Forgrim of the Warriors. The realm itself was at its largest in terms of population and the Immortals walked the realm alongside mortals. Supported by a talented team of GL's, truly anything seemed possible at this time and a vibrancy and sense of camaraderie was felt within the guild under Valan's leadership.

Like many within the Thieves Guild, Valan had chosen to follow Lord Kestanan's Temple of Thievery, Shadows and the Night and along with his duties as Guildmaster of the Thieves – he also became the High Priest of Shadows in service to his Lord. His term of service as GM ended only upon his ascension to the Hero of the Night. Valan's impact on the guild can still be seen to this day for it was he who constructed the Desert Outpost and even created the Dark Elven Buckler (a prized possession for any Master Thief).

While Valan's accomplishments should be spoken of with pride, it should not give the impression of a guild dominated by one legendary figure. The reputations of many famed Thieves were made during this era. Indeed, as Valan ascended, a short time later another of his GL's also ascended to the heavens. Corin, known as an ambitious and cocky young thief also seized the chance for glory – joining the heavens as one of Finargon's heroes.

The Fifth Guildmaster
Protean
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GLs: Gorban, Sisterowl, Devatar
Wealth rightfully belongs to those who can acquire it” author unknown.
Paraphrased from 'old writings' sourced by Kiresch

Following the ascension of Valan, the fifth Guild Master was Protean; who was elected alongside the GL's Gorban, Sisterowl and Devatar. Better known as the 'Teethless Wonder' due to his teeth having been stolen by Brement; Protean was a famous and popular thief and like many adventurers in the realm he opted to follow Kyria in the Temple of Fate in the path of Pain.

Given the size of the lands and the fact that the Immortals regularly interfered with the lives of mortals, many momentous events and changes occurred during this era. Indeed one of the largest changes came directly from the Creator Deori himself. Previously the highest level of skill a mortal could aspire to was Level 35, however Deori saw fit to increase this to level 100. Many had now reached the 35th Milestone and a new challenge beckoned for the adventurers of the land. The first to reach the 100th Milestone and be deemed the first Champion was the Warrior Roachmill. However, the first thief to perform this task was Shadowy_death, a former assassin and Blade of Zir (wielder of the sword Bifrost) but by now, a member of our guild. With this change in the lands, new policies were developed that ensured members kept their guild level at least half their land level, to ensure the flow of tithe to the treasury did not dry up.

While the changes were many, not all were for the good. During this time, a tragic event within the realm took place, as Lord Kestanan, Immortal of the Night, Thievery and Shadows left Terris for the Shadow realm. This was a deep loss for all Thieves and those who worshipped the values he stood for. With our Patron missing, Valan, Hero of the Night himself was almost unapproachable as he searched for his Immortal without his quest bearing fruit. While still holding the memory of Kestanan and his ethos close, Valan eventually moved on from the Temple of Shadows. He found sponsorship from the Immortal of Luck, Medea (a warlock in her mortal days).

While not one who stalked the shadows, Medea certainly embodied certain values Thieves hold close to them; strength, guile and force of will. It is speculated that it was though her connection with Valan, that Medea came to act as our second Immortal Patron. Medea was a feared Immortal, known for her harshness and for not suffering fools gladly. Indeed, with such an Immortal as our patron, the Guild's confidence increased; although equally our members were kept on their toes. Medea was just as likely to trigger invasions of beasts into the Guild itself or mete out her wrath upon anyone, irrespective of whether they were a thief or not.

The Sixth Guildmaster
Sisterowl
Elected in the Year 152
GLs: Jihan, Swift_blade, Southbound, Nera
...always hold your
head high; for you are a Tranos Thief and no
one else compares to your greatness
Sisterowl

After Protean's time as Guildmaster, Sisterowl was elected as GM. Following boisterous characters such as Valan and Protean, Sisterowl stood in stark contrast as she was, relatively speaking at least, a disciplinarian and a stickler for propriety. During her term, she even attempted to ban gambling and drinking within the guild – something that did not go down well with a significant portion of the membership who made it their business to turn up their nose to authority at the best of times. Notwithstanding this change in tone in the leadership, Sisterowl remained a successful leader. She was well known for spending time at the guild's recall point, aiding and mentoring new Thieves or any who needed it.

Sisterowl also holds a notable place in history as one of the first council members of the Order of the Black Rose. This ancient organisation can trace its roots back to the Age of Creation where legendary thieves, rogues and assassins of old such as Kestanan, Dodger, Gothic, Ferret, and Zero reached an accord to form a high-council of thieves and admirers of the night. The organisation was ruled by the Table of Eight, its very existence known only to these eight individuals. However, with the loss of Kestanan and the Temple of Shadows to the realm, the leaders of the Black Rose decided that a new forum was needed to allow members of the shadow-walking guilds to mix with each other. Concordantly, membership of the Order was opened up and the organisation itself recognised as a Household. At this point in time, the members of the Council were the Rogues Mordorith and Ekkasia, the Assassins Trebek, Drogun and Kahlan and the Thieves Sisterowl and Gorban.

The thieving guilds are unique in the way that a degree of co-operation has existed between the Rogues, Thieves and Assassins for many years. Looking at the fighting guilds, the Warriors and Knights have feuded for centuries, or the in the case of the magical guilds, the Warlocks have walked to beat of their own drum since their inception. Relations between us and the the Assassins and Rogues have generally consisted of a friendly rivalry over the years. Naturally the strength of this relationship has ebbed and flowed as different personalities led the various factions (it has gone beyond a friendly rivalry in the past and no doubt shall do so again). However, on the whole, most conflict has largely been down to banter between the members. By way of example, our lowest guild title for many years was 'Artful Dodger' a not so subtle dig at the old Rogue's GM (who seemed to take it all in good humour). This co-operation between the Guilds is largely due to our shared heritage and ethos that flows from the days of Kestanan; reinforced first by his temple and then the Order of the Black Rose. It was during this time that the shared outpost in the mountains was conceived of (although it would be many years and much effort before it came to be). The idea that any other coalition of guilds in the land could achieve such a thing is almost laughable given the festering tensions that exist between them. Therefore, it should be recognised that our elders have paved the way for something quite remarkable.

Given her political skills that had been honed within the Thieves Guild and the Order of the Black Rose, it was therefore quite appropriate that she would go on to become the first modern Baroness of Tranos (as Oltravar had long since abandoned the city).

The Seventh Guildmaster
Swift_Blade
Elected in the Year 168
GLs: Nera, Neithan, Jinx, Nhonahoe
Long live the Guild of Thieves, to plunder the
pockets of innocents for an eternity to come...
" Valan

With Sisterowl standing down from the office of GM to take on the barony of Tranos, the guild elected Swift_blade to the role of GM. While not as famous outside our order as say Valan or Sisterowl, or as irreverent and popular as Protean, Swift_blade was known within the Thieves Guild as a professional thief. A true exemplar of a Master Thief, it indicated his success within the guild and the respect he had earned of the membership of our Order. His term of service was largely successful, as the membership was not so much instructed, but inspired to get back to what we do best – obtaining riches. Indeed, much glory was brought to our guild during this era as well, as Corin and Gorban ascended to Immortal and Hero respectively.

Firstly, Corin, while not our actual guild hero, he had continued to keep a close eye on the Thieves given his past within our order. In what may almost be treated as a lesson of the perils of love, Corin was to take his next step in life. All knew of Corin's great love for Kilana of the Brotherhood. Alas, tragedy struck as Kilana sought to avert a disaster facing the realm, unfortunately her attempt effort caused her to collapse, and with her little remaining strength she told Corin, that a true artefact of death would save her and the realm. Corin, desperate to save his wife gathered together a party of adventurers, and with their aid he carried Kilana deep into the Underworld. Battling through the demonic hordes, eventually only Corin and Kilana survived. They came eventually to a huge treasure room and within it, the shattered remains of the Black Mace of Death was found. Together, Kilana and Corin remade the Mace, emerging as the Immortal's of Death and rulers of the Underworld. While Corin was always ambitious and destined for greatness as a mortal, would he really have chosen to become the Immortal of Death? No one will ever really know, as upon his ascension he truly embraced the role of Master of Death and Lord of the Underworld.

As for Gorban, he remains one of our most beloved guild heroes. Rising through the ranks of the Thieves he was a popular and well known thief and also a proud half-ogre. Indeed, it was perhaps his ogre heritage that he was perhaps best known for. While other thieves were masters of the art of assassination, Gorban preferred to stand and fight his opponents face to face until they were crushed before him. Like many other half-ogres, was also not one for tidiness. Indeed, his locker became so cluttered that a strange creature known only as 'Bump' took up residence in it. Many a young thief was told to beware when stowing items in their locker, in case Bump feasted upon them.

The Eighth Guildmaster
Neithan
Elected in the Year 178
GLs: Baelwrath, Noelani, Southbound
"Glory to Shadows, Darkness, and the
reign of eternal Night
The Table of Eight

Following Swift_blade; Neithan was elected as GM of the Thieves. He was a famed thief, comparable to Protean due to his great sense of humour (although maybe a bit more refined) which accounted for his popularity within the Guild. But in a similar way to how many had followed Kestanan to Shadows or Medea to luck, Neithan entered into the rankings of the Temple of Death as Corin had now ascended. With Neithan's steps down a darker path of a Temple dedicated to the destruction of the Overworld and its instutitions, some feared for the future with our GM as a worshipper of Death. These fears proved somewhat unfounded, as despite the awesome power of the demonic hordes of the Underworld, the forces of light contained Corin and Kilana's ambitions.

Indeed, during this era, the guild continued to function with many of our members continuing to bring fame and recognition to our guild. For example, Shadowy_death, the famed Blade of Zir founded his household, the Dragon's Vengeance. Named after the sunken ship the Sea Dragon, Shadowy_death recruited a crew with members from across the realm and led the household for many years over many adventures (it would eventually go on to become one of the largest HH's in the land for a brief time at least). Or more infamously, Jinx, who continued to elude the authorities as he became known for the highest amount of Town Guard kills in the lands.

The Ninth Guildmaster
Baelwrath
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GLs: Wing, Southbound, Noelani
If it's not nailed down it's mine and
if I can prise it loose, it's not nailed down
Baelwrath

Upon the end of Neithan's term as GM, Baelwrath was elected to be the ninth Guildmaster. This was something of a time of change in the lands and it was reflected in the guild itself, presenting a challenging environment for Baelwrath to govern. An older generation of legendary Thieves was starting to go their separate ways as Thieves such as Sisterowl, Protean, Devatar had all departed the realms in the recent past.

This created two problems, as some key role models for a younger generation of thieves were now gone and also; those older thieves left behind had lost some of their oldest companions. The days when the world was young and everyone was united in exploring the lands together had long past. Whereas one generation had hunted together, quested together, robbed and drunk together. This new make up of the guild faced a new challenge as older thieves who had walked in the most challenging and extreme areas of the realm were unlikely to accompany the younger generation to, say, the Goblin King's castle. This leadership challenge has always existed to a degree, but as the chasm in skills and ability grew between the different generations, it certainly became magnified and more of an issue. Older thieves cited a loss of community, whereas the younger generation found it hard to relate to members of the guild who they rarely mixed with.

Baelwrath had risen to prominence rapidly in the guild and having effectively been one of the younger thieves, he could certainly relate to the newer arrivals in the guild. Known for his shining wit, he did a good job in trying to bridge the gap and despite the challenges, his term as GM ended well.

The Tenth Guildmaster
Noelani
Date of Election - Unrecorded
GLs: Southbound, Sandreus, Mela, Tilana, Ryden, Scimitar-sid
If it looks like it might have value... STEAL IT!Gremil

To this day, Noelani remains one our greatest and longest serving GM's. In our Guild's past some Guildmaster's had been elected through their fame and legendary deeds, or their charismatic leadership. Noelani was from a different school of leadership however, one who took a genuine interest in everyone in the Guild's membership and was known to all within the Guild. This caring and detailed attitude was combined with a fine strategic mind that made for a skilled leader.

Conceived of many years before, a shared outpost between the three shadow-walking guilds had been long talked of. However, it is one thing to talk and discuss; another to actually deliver change. It was under Noelani's reign as GM that this idea finally came to fruition with the aid of Drogun (GM of the Assassins) and Silk (GM of the Rogues). All three of these GM's were members of the Order of the Black Rose and together, they reached an agreement over funding the outpost. Much gold was spent excavating tunnels beneath the outpost with a view to exploiting existing caverns across the realm to allow thieves, assassins and rogues to traverse the lands underground. Unfortunately, an earthquake collapsed much of the excavated works and while the outpost still stands, the tunnels themselves were unusable. Instead, the three GM's opted for the creation of three magical portals to allow entrance to the outpost.

Towards the end of Noelani's term, another notable event occurred with the former rogue GL Jaimie Lachlan petitioning the thieves for membership. He was leaving his guild with a degree of bitterness and requested the Thieves grant him a new home. Some within the guild took exception to this request, most notably the thief Leron who took offence to the idea that Jaimie should join the guild, accusing him of mocking the Thieves in the past. Jaimie defended himself publicly, stating that he had certainly defended the Rogues while their leader – but it had always been in the spirit of friendly banter. Others in the guild came to Jaimie's defence, stating that they had only had good dealings with him and found him to be a helpful individual. Having let the guild have their say, Noelani stepped in, stating that Jaimie would have a short trial period in the guild. If no problems emerged, then he could stay. This shrewd compromise ended the argument almost immediately and demonstrated Noelani's style of leadership and the strength her word carried.

The Eleventh Guildmaster
Sandreus
Elected in the Year 221
GLs: Scimitar-sid, Southbound, Ryden, Summerrain, Cleptonius, Shadowy_death

The day belongs to the quick, the smoothed-
tounged, and the light-fingered
” author unknown.
Paraphrased from 'old writings' sourced by Kiresch

Sandreus was elected as the 11th Guildmaster, following his time as GL under Noelani where he had proved a popular and affable lieutenant rising quickly to prominence. Unfortunately, following such a strong leader as Noelani many others thought they were as worthy as Sandreus to succeed her political rumbles began within the guild soon after his appointment. While having given so much during his time as a GL under Noelani, Sandreus soon found himself diverted from his duties. The campaign of whispers amongst a small minority of thieves soon broke out into open rebellion. Ryden and Mordimer were the first to publicly break rank and demand Guild elections. This led Nhonahoe to step forward and speak out about 'etiquette'. While Nhonahoe didn't necessarily disagree with the sentiments – he voiced his disappointment over the way the request had been made, where it appeared the guild family had turned on one of its own and that there were less uncouth ways to force an election than this. Even with Nhonahoe's intervention, Sandreus himself addressed the problem and acknowledged the need for an election and announced his retirement shortly afterwards. Elections were held once more and Cleptonius was elected as GM.

The Twelfth Guildmaster
Cleptonius
Elected in the Year 234
GLs: Summerrain, Nhonahoe, Piqie
It seems you wish to assert yourselves after years
of decay and rest. I look forward to observing
upcoming events
Torretan, Overlord of Twilight

Following the accusations of inactivity levied against the previous leadership that strayed towards rebellion; almost immediately after his election, Cleptonius set out to remedy the situation. A series of robberies across the land were carried out (notably including Club Solace, owned by the Warlock Sub-zero). The Knight's GM of the time, Sir Heimdall confronted Cleptonius over who was to blame. In reality, the robberies had been part of a larger plot, little more than bait in a trap. Heimdall was poisoned at the Knight's Guild Gate and Cleptonius retreated back to Tranos – taking with him the only possible cure with a view to ransoming it while declaring the two guilds to be at war. While most Thieves backed Cleptonius out of loyalty, there were whispers over whether this course of action was desirable. Whether it was desirable or not, the reputation of the Thieves as a guild of action was enhanced; with even the Overlord of Twilight, Torretan passing on his congratulations to the guild for waking from its slumber.

Cleptonius, remains a somewhat divisive character in our history. Some questioned the wisdom of battling with the Knights, while others thought his loyalties lay with the Temple of Fate rather than the Guild. Regardless of these speculations, there is no doubt Cleptonius did what he set out to do – bring energy and activity to the Guild.

Midway through the term of Cleptonius, he disappeared from the realm. Despite the Guild's extensive network of informants and spies – no sign could be found of him. Perhaps the Knights had him assassinated, perhaps the pressure of the battle was too much. Whatever happened to Cleptonius was something of a mystery. However, like a ship without a rudder, the guild began to drift; and while not an issue in times of peace – at the point of tensions with the Knights, it left the guild in an undesirable place.

Notably, during this era, Valan returned to the realm – but no longer blessed by his Lord Kestanan, instead, he was mortal once more. Still a natural leader, Valan stepped forward and declared his intentions to run for Guildmaster again. While some welcomed the intervention, others accused Valan of arrogance. Ultimately a vote of confidence was held, and the guild opted to hold elections for a new Guildmaster. However, that was not the end of the controversies of the reign of Cleptonius. Once the election was under way, problems erupted early on, with Drogun, the former Assassins Guildmaster and current Baron of Twilight stepping in to endorse Valan ahead of other candidates. Many took affront to this interference into internal guild affairs. Regardless of the intervention, Valan obtained the blessing of the majority of the Thieves to take up the mantle of leadership once again.

The Thirteenth Guildmaster
Valan
Elected in the Year 239
GLs: Sandreus, Piqie, Nhonahoe, Southbound (appointed)
The fires burn so the lost may return
ancient thieves proverb.

With Valan's return to the position of Guildmaster, he left little time in seizing the reins of leadership once again. Almost immediately a truce was called with the Knights, with Valan citing the unprofitable nature of the conflict. Sandreus, Piqie and Nhonahoe were elected to support Valan as his GL's and an air of expectation settled over the Thieves given their former GM and Hero had returned to them.

Unfortunately, this proved to be a challenging time again, as Valan seemed to misjudge the political mood of the guild. Valan opted to appoint Southbound as an extra GL. A few vocal objections were raised by Thieves such as Jaimie who in turn found support from elders such as Nhonahoe. Few criticised Southbound's skills or character, but again the accusation of Valan's arrogance found its way to the fore; along with Valan being characterised as having a 'father knows best' attitude. Equally, many other Thieves supported Valan's right to appoint a GL as he was the Guildmaster. For Valan himself, he remained steadfast and refused to back down in front of the building pressure and division within the Guild; stating that his critics mistook confidence in his abilities for arrogance.

Conversely, a highlight during this era related to the competition of the 'Tri-Blade Cup'. Under the direction of the Rogues Tayina and the Assassin Drogun, the Assassin Stragen proposed a tournament between the three shadow guilds. A tournament testing knowledge of the lands, its history and combat skills. Stragen hired a neutral party, the Hero of the Knight's Guild, Sir Brynmor as Master of the Tournament. The Thieves dominated in each round opening up an unassailable lead. Upon the final day of combat, the Thieves emerged victorious again – with Nhonahoe accepting the Tri-Blade Cup on behalf of the Thieves.

Even with the victory, this was only a small bright spot in what had become in reality become a difficult term for Valan. The row over the appointment of Southbound left a bad taste in the mouth for many and this second time as leader was far from the golden age of his first period of service. Ultimately, duties elsewhere started sapping his time and Valan offered his resignation and retired from the role. Even with the challenging times of his second period as leader, Valan's abilities had brought a degree of stabilisation to the guild which needed it after the tumultuous leadership of Cleptonius.

The Fourteenth Guildmaster
Noelani - GM (Interim)
Appointed in the Year 246
>HELP NOELANI
Noelani thanks you for your help. Your gold pouch feels lighter, somehow...

Almost in parallel into the resignation of Valan, Bob, the Ballad-man and Minstrel of Terris, assumed patronage of the guild. While not a thief by trade, he certainly understood the moral shades of grey that our Order operates within. With the guild lacking a leader, Bob appointed Noelani to the role on an interim basis until an election could be held.

The Fifteenth Guildmaster
Nhonahoe
Elected in the Year 247
GLs Summerain, Nekros
Trust in the shadows, for the bright way makes for easy targets” author unknown.
Paraphrased from 'old writings' sourced by Kiresch

Having served as GL under three different GM's, Nhonahoe was already an experienced leader and a respected member of the Guild. While many of the Thieves Guildmasters were renowned within our order alone, Nhonahoe was an equally legendary figure outside of the Guild, known throughout the realm for his combat skills and connections with his peers in other Guilds.

Being politically astute, Nhonahoe's term of service proved to be a most welcome stable and peaceful period for the Thieves with little controversy or cause for complaint. Indeed, following the terms of service of Cleptonius and Valan, Nhonahoe's leadership allowed for a period of closure and the guild really settled down once more. However, ultimately other duties ate up the time he could dedicate to the office of Guildmaster. Like Valan before him, he offered his resignation and an election was held.

The Sixteenth Guildmaster
Jihan
Elected in Year 262
First Term: GLs Mhazerimullen, Summerrain
Second Term: GLs Summerrain, Veshar
Good thieves are tricky and fast. Quick wits
and a quicker blade should help you pass this test
John Quail

Following the resignation of Nhonahoe, Jihan was elected as Guildmaster and she in turn proved to be an able administrator, eventually serving for nearly two terms prior to an early resignation. Building on the solid foundations left by Nhonanoe, Jihan's leadership proved to be an active time for the guild, with numerous guild hunts led, trivia games and challenges – including a large trivia maze placed temporarily beneath the guild recall point. While such activities could be viewed as whimsical, Jihan was a shrewd leader and knew the value of having a guild who knew the realm like the back of their hands. Using the motivation of competition to pass down this knowledge continued on at a pace and it proved to be a profitable time for the Thieves.

While every Guildmaster seeks new opportunities for wealth for the guild, few could have foreseen what happened next under Jihan's leadership. Noelani, the former GM was appointed as the Baron of Tranos. Not since the time of Sisterowl's time as Baroness had the Thieves ruled the Tranos openly as well as behind the scenes. Indeed, during the time of Noelani's leadership, while other cities opened shops selling clothes – Tranos opted for a thieves market; selling all sorts of useful equipment. Unfortunately, despite her good term of service, Jihan resigned from her second term early, triggering another election for the guild.

The Seventeenth Guildmaster
Summerrain
Elected in the Year 289
GL: Veshar
Light Shines through Evil. One must have
darkness to see the light.
Summerrain

Summerrain became the interim GM while an election was run and was the only thief with enough nominations to stand. Minstrel Bob confirmed her in post as GM; while Veshar remained as GL having only just been elected. Summerrain's period of leadership was one of our more successful terms of service in recent times. A committed and hard worker, she was cut from similar cloth to Noelani in that she took an interest in individuals within the guild. Various competitions and challenges were set for the guild membership with a varied level of interest.

Towards the end of Summerrain's term as GM, Mordimer, a key player in the resignation of Sandreus publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with the state of the guild. He claimed that the guild was rotting in its foundations and that Kestanan and Valan would be ashamed of its public face. Summerrain opted not to respond, although the Patron of the Guild, Bob entered into an exchange with Mordimer. The challenge of Mordimer died in its infancy, as Bob queried Mordimer's rationale for speaking out by asking what he wanted to see change. No ideas were forthcoming and therefore little support was found for the leadership challenge.

The Eighteenth Guildmaster:
Mordimer
Elected in the Year 325
GLs: Baelwrath, Cenedra
"..What may elude me from the beginning, shall be
turned upon you to delude you in the closing moments
of your existence at my side.
" Vagma

The eighteenth Guildmaster, Mordimer was elected by popular vote. Despite having voiced his frustrations in the past, Mordimer was in reality a long serving, well respected (if somewhat vocal) member of the guild with many ideas ready to put into action. However, he had been one of those instrumental in the resignation of Sandreus as GM; and having indicated previously his desire to lead – the bitterest irony came about as upon his appointment to the office of Guildmaster. Other duties called upon his time and while having called upon both Sandreus and Summerrain to step down from GM due to their time commitments – Mordimer found himself in the exact same position. With his term cut short before his plans could be put into place, Mordimer resigned as GM, leaving his GL's Baelwrath and Cenedra to hold the fort.
The Nineteenth Guildmaster
Baelwrath (Interim – partially filled Mordimer's term)
Date of Appointment - Unrecorded
GL: Cenedra
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will
annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
Baelwrath

Having just been through one election, it was decided that Baewlrath (given his previous experience as GM) would act as interim GM in the short term. Baelwrath took up the gauntlet of leadership and started to drive the guild forward, seeking to inject some activity into a guild that was still somewhat surprised by the loss of Mordimer. Baelwrath started examining our guild weaponry and undertook a review of our guild titles. However, some Thieves struggled with the pace of change and queried whether Baelwrath really had a mandate to do this, given the lack of election. Others spoke in stronger terms, demanding when elections would be held as the guild was not 'Baelwrath's plaything'. While these negative comments came from a minority of Thieves, elections were still organised by Bob.

The Twentieth Guildmaster
Summerrain
Appointed in the Year 329 (filled remainder of Mordimer's term)
GL: Yearin, Adolaria
May prosperity and silver palms grace you all.” Minstrel Bob, the Ballad-man

Summerrain's second time leading the guild began in an inauspicious manner. With Baelwrath filling Mordimer's role as interim GM, elections were organised with Yearin and Baelwrath as the two Thieves nominated for the election. During the election itself, concerns (bordering on accusations of corruption) were raised about the election process. The Patron, Bob, took offence at the questions raised against his integrity. While normally a rather jovial and placid character, Bob's reaction was in fact one of anger at this attack on his honour. Instead of opting to re-run the election, Bob cancelled the election and appointed Summerrain as the GM to see out the remaining term of Mordimer.

Given her capability and the short amount of time that had actually passed since her successful time as GM, no one really objected to Summerrain's elevation to the role once again. While the guild continued to operate largely smoothly under Summerrain's leadership, the lack of an election did create an element of tension between the two candidates who could have been GM. Where an innocent comment from one was made, it was interpreted by the other as a bid for power at the expense of others in the Guild. The truth of the matter was almost irrelevant as the tension simply continued on – eroding the spirit of camaraderie within the guild. This episode represents a good lesson for the future, of the need for democracy to be seen to operate within the Thieves Guild. Allowing the guild to decide upon its leaders it removes any perceived slights or damaged pride.

Nevertheless, Summerrain's experience in leading the guild shone through and the Thieves continued to grow under her steady hand. Indeed, during this time, Noelani brought much glory to our guild as she became the first mortal to reach 1000 quests; cementing her reputation as one of our most legendary elders.

The Twenty-First Guildmaster
Mamba
Elected in Frostfall of the Year 338
GLs: Baelwrath, Cenedra, Summerrain
May the Shadows guide your bladeMamba

Details of Mamba's term cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

During this time though, Bob the Balladman, a stalwart Hero for our guild left the lands for new adventures. Given the Thieves independent nature, the guild continued to function although it was something of a quiet time. Indeed, the most notable event during this era was the change of patron – with Lord Silk assuming patronage of the Guild. While a few elder Thieves were uneasy about a former Rogue taking on the duties of patron, the fears proved unfounded as it seemed that Silk had transcended any petty mortal rivalries and considerations upon reaching immortality. Having become the Immortal of Thievery, Shadows and the Night, it certainly seemed that Silk overlooked any differences between the Assassins, Rogues and Thieves. Thus far, he has proved a reliable and fair patron to all those who call the shadows home.

The Twenty-Second Guildmaster
Jaimie Lachlan
Elected in First Growth of the Year 358
GLs: Summerrain, Clyve, Zentahlest
I suspect your lively spirit will add a special
glint to this guild's coveting eye <sly grin>.
Piqie

Since his arrival in the guild during the term of Noelani, Jaimie had become a popular member of the guild. Renowned throughout the realm as 'Swashbuckling' Jaimie, he was best known as the Pirate Captain of the Grimwave. With Lord Silk now acting as patron of the guild, elections were once again organised and Jaimie was elected as leader of the Thieves.

An experienced leader, Jaimie had already a Guild Lieutenant of the Rogues, Household Owner of the 'Pirates of Norland' and a Temple Leader of the Sea. With this strong foundation Jaimie overcame any objections about a 'former Rogue' as GM through his equally strong personality. Once in power, he proved to be a breath of fresh air for the guild, injecting some much needed energy into the day to day running of the Thieves.

Perhaps what is most interesting of Jaimie's term is how the guild seemed to take on a more nautical theme with two famed pirate captain's Elyssar and Clyve also choosing to dock at Tranos. With the Grimwave acting as flagship, soon a veritable pirate fleet was sailing out of Tranos under the direction of key members of the Thieves Guild. Trade routes across land and sea were either taxed directly, robbed upon land or sunk at sea; with many riches and treasures seized by our members. However, in what was now becoming a depressing trend, like many Guildmaster's before him, Jaimie found other duties pressing upon his time and he was forced to leave Norland for a time with the Grimwave sailing for the distant southern seas.

The Twenty-Third Guildmaster
Tali
Elected in Awakenings of the Year 396
GL: Veshar
'Sweet water and light laughter till next we meet' Tali

With Jaimie leaving the lands, the guild was leaderless once more. In turn, Lord Silk once again organised elections and Tali was elected as GM. Tali had led a varied life, having once been a Battlemage and after that, an Assassin before joining our guild in the time of Baelwrath's term as interim GM. Tali was well known to the membership as a caring and talented mentor – one who took time out to spend with any who crossed her path. Some queried her suitability for leadership, as she was also a Temple Leader in the Order of Cassandra – as the Paladin of Truth. However, her leadership experience and her generosity with her time clearly won the membership of the guild over. With more energy in the guild and new members joining the Guild, Tali's term as GM had got off to a good start. Tragedy struck however, as Tali passed on from this realm; saddening many within the Thieves (and those outside our guild who knew her well).

The Twenty-Fourth Guildmaster
Veshar
Appointed in Awakenings of the Year 402
Start to rid yourself of those feelings, we must
help ourselves above all else
Veshar
(answering a query about feelings of guilt from a young thief after his first successful confidence trick...)

Following the sad loss of Tali, Veshar took on the burden of leadership of a guild in mourning for one of its own. However, with his leadership and guidance the order of Thieves began to move forward once more. Like Jaimie before him, Veshar was a former Rogue, but no voices of dissent were heard upon his appointment as GM. He was well respected throughout the guild as an intelligent and capable thief.

Veshar gave much time in terms of mentoring newer Thieves; not so much in combat and bladecraft, but more of how one might conduct oneself as a Thief and the wide variety of careers open to members of our guild. Putting his intellect to use, Veshar was something of a visionary leader with many ambitious ideas put forward on how the guild's influence could be grown further throughout the realm. Alas, like so many of our Guildmaster's before him, other duties called upon Veshar's time and he left Norland for a time, leaving many of his projects incomplete.

The Twenty-Fifth Guildmaster
Nefiris
Appointed in First Harvest of the Year 431

Second Term: GL Jericho
Third Term: Unfilled
Fourth Term: GL Jaimie
Fifth Term: Position Closed

Let's hit the streets, wander the shadows, and
rifle through what will soon be ours
Nefiris

After Veshar left the realm for a time, the position of GM remained unfilled for a significant period. Lord Silk made a proclamation that any thief wishing to take up the office was to contact him and put their name forward. This was a dark time for the guild with its membership and its activity at its lowest level as no one answered Lord Silk's call. However, things began to change as Nefiris stepped forward and offered her time as leader. During the period of time without a leader, the guild had succumbed to a feeling of ennui and those thieves that remained had largely focused on their own affairs rather than the guild.

Recognizing the starting point of what she had inherited, rather than setting out some grand vision, Nefiris took a pragmatic approach instead. From her opening address to the guild, she stated that "We are going to take things a day at a time. We will focus on the present. Working together, working collectively, we will pave a future". Aided by Jericho, Nefiris began building the foundations of a successful two terms as GM by initially leading small scale hunts and adventures. Through these green shoots of activity, newer members joined the guild and some older thieves began to haunt the halls again. From this start point, a sense of fellowship was rekindled and adventures were had without Nefiris having personally lead them - perhaps most notoriously, Jericho, Badon and Argent stole Lord Oligar's personal carriage (that is now safely stowed away in our desert outpost). Under the sponsorship of Nefiris, during this time, feeling inspired by the new energy within the guild, Duke Badon documented and published this guild history.

Presumably feeling buoyed by the early successes, Nefiris began to stamp her authority wider than the internal workings of the guild. Battles over the luck began to gain Nefiris a reputation outside of our order as a somewhat divisive character who was quick to anger. Weaker leaders took offence to what they saw as luck theft. For her part, Nefiris was simply happy to stand her ground and fight for the benefit of the guild, not caring about the opinions of outsiders. Others were happy to work and ally with her though, at one point, a dispute amongst the Rogues, Thieves and Assassins saw Ermak the Assassins GM and Nefiris act to block the Rogues out of the Tri-Guild outpost - a place until then had been recognized as neutral ground. While the rights and wrongs of this dispute between Fonzie (GM of the Rogues at the time) and Nefiris and Ermak are debatable, it was clear that Nefiris was at the heart of the unprecedented action.

Fighting a successful second election, Nefiris continued to run the guild much as before as well as continuing to play in the wider political arena. The arrival of the Khatarans' around the year 465 saw an ineffective response from the bureaucrats that run Tranos. Prompted by the Warlock Guildmaster Venis, an alliance between the Thieves, Warlocks and Warriors was reached, with a 'Tri-Guild Council' established to help fight against the common foe. While the Council is now dissolved, Nefiris represented our Guild and more than held her own against the strong personalities of Venis and Marcin to ensure it functioned during the battles.

Not one for letting events dictate her course, preferring always to walk her own path, Nefiris resigned from the position of Guildmaster and slipped off into the night surprising many within the guild. It is unclear whether she would have passed a new vote of confidence when the time came, instead upon her resignation Lord Silk called for elections, resulting in Jaimie's appointment as the next GM having been reelected unopposed.
