Canine Cacophony

Post by Max Grubfield »

Max stands at his locker putting his instruments into the storage area that has been put aside for his belongings. He strikes out into the woods, dagger in hand as he thinks carefully about the task that Nefiris has set before him. Bringing back 50 wolf corpses and creating a masterpiece of art for a neighbor in the city. With ease he tracks and kills the beasts, carrying as many as he can to the butcher, requesting that he is given in return 15 skins, 24 intestines, and 1 heart. The butcher looks at the halfling curiously but begins putting together the order, his apprentices quickly slicing the bodies into bits, pieces of meat to be sold in the market for stews and steaks, but the requested body parts being put aside.

Max hands a merchant a small purse of gold and asks that he transports the young halfling to Lyresong along with his bloody sack of wolf parts. Pulling into the city, Max approaches a young elf and whispers for a moment before the elf nods excitedly, looking down at the short man speaking so animatedly with his hands.

After some time, Max is sitting on a rooftop next to Jynx, kicking his feet back and forth from the edge, his lute in his lap, strumming happily as Jynx's teeth grit tightly.

Suddenly, up from the street a young girl's voice is heard.

"Excuse me, Brother Kringle?" the young girls asks, her brown hair pulled back in a ponytail that has clearly become looser and more mussed as the day has progressed.

The monk peers down at the girl, a frown on his face, his head, mostly bald, reflecting the noon sun.

The girl pulls on the hem of her dress uncomfortably "My name is Rebbeckah, and I'm here with my friends from the Orphanage, we wanted to thank you very much for your gifts. When the courier delivered them to us, we were surprised to hear that you had been so kind, so we wanted to be sure you knew we were learning how to use them!"

Kringle stands, his thick wool robes swishing around him as he looks down the alleyway. A group of children have gathered, most of them missing teeth, all of them covered in dirt. Fifteen of them hold very small barrels with animal skin pulled tightly across the top forming a drum appropriately sized for their young hands. Eight of them hold small lutes, each strung with three tightly pulled strings.

As the old monk looks at the children in consternation, Rebeckah turns to the group and counts loudly "1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4"

Loudly the young children each begin banging on their drums and playing on their lutes as Rebeckah sings a song loudly about a young gnome farmer who had many types of animals on his farm.

Turning with anger, Kringle enters the building behind him to gather a few more brothers to help him shoo the young children away. As soon as the door closes, Max reaches into his pack and pulls out a bloody wolf heart, aiming carefully, he lobs it down into the street below, missing all the orphans, but hitting the pavement with a meaty SMACK just near Rebekkah's feet. High pitched squealing fills the street as the young orphans run quickly back towards the harbor and the safety of the orphanage before the monks return.

Chuckling to himself Max stands up dusting the dirt from his pants and begins jumping from rooftop to rooftop until he drops suddenly out of sight. Moments later he is seen drinking a glass of ice water telling a robed figure about the look on Kringle's face as the young orphans brought their musical art to the entrance of the Brotherhood Guild.

Sally!” Grubfield’s cry rang out through the entrance hall of the house of Wealth Redistribution. Jericho watched as the wings on Max’s feet unexpectedly separated from his ankles and flew away. Max hit the ground with a hollow thump, followed by a long pause of silence.

From the other side of the flames, a massive wolf stalked out of the darkness. Her eyes on the small halfling intensely as she neared him. The great canine towered over Max as she neared him, each step deliberate and heavy.

Max reached behind her ear and gave her a scratch. Her face immediately softened and her tongue rolled out of her mouth. Eyes that seemed cold and dark seemed immediately beady. Jericho scanned the ground and avoided eye contact with the two as they became acquainted with one another.

Let’s head to the lounge, the first round of Cocoa is on me.” Jericho made the easy offer, knowing Max only drank water. The two headed indoors, Sally accompanying the halfling.

Maybe I can put bells on her feet.” Max mused aloud, as they bounded up the stairwell, Jericho walking more slowly than they “So we can play music together." he added
