A Message has Arrived

Post by Nefiris »

<A letter addressed to Guildmistress Makali of the Rangers' Guild makes its way to Dirimloth and is received by a Ranger scout>

Upon breaking of the wax seal bearing the official insignia of the Thieves' Guild and removal of the paper contained inside:

My Dearest Makali,

News of the Rangers' readiness to aid the city of Tranos in these troubling times has warmed my heart. I must say that, personally, I am truly grateful. I thank you all.

I would like to change and clarify some of the details that had been previously discussed between Marcin and yourself in regard to the capacity that the Rangers will be helping. While your providing of rations and ingots are more than welcome, we most desire your bow crafting and fletching skills to bolster our arms. We will also be asking for your tracking and scouting expertise to assist in combing the landscapes surrounding the city including the tribute cities. Danger may lurk anywhere and everywhere, and the Rangers skill-set will prove most useful in our preventative measures.

The Rangers will be welcomed through the gates of Tranos. I must thank you again.

Until we meet,

Nefiris

A blast of his wings took him off from his quarters at the top of the Thieves guild hall. He knew where he was going. He had been to the area nearby several times, and had even followed some tracks into that part of Dirimloth. His wings shuddered and pulled as he flew over the eastern edge of Tranos, through Nirimloth. Looking down, he could see the Great Northern Road. It's beaten track was unmistakable, even at the height that he was flying at. As he veered a little left, he started to descend closer to the northern part of Dirimloth forest. This was the location. It was clearly embedded in his head as he looked at maps on the walls of the Thieves guild. He landed with a thud that shook the ground at the start of the forest. The great redwood trees looked down on him, enveloping, and snuffed out nearly any light that may try to shine through.

The forest began to shimmer around him, and took on a ghostly grey hue. He could still see very clearly, though anyone looking for him would see only a faint outline, if they saw anything at all. His footsteps made no noise, and his body gave off no heat or smell. He walked near a wolf without the slightest hint that it was not alone. His inner curiosity almost got the better of him, wondering if he could jump on the wolf's back and go for a ride, when suddenly he heard a faint noise. To anyone that would not have enhanced senses, and even those that do, it might seem like nothing, but he knew that sound. It was the sound of an arrow being stretched across the sinew of a bow. He knew that sound very well, as he was carrying a bow of Elven make himself, and the sinew for Elven make bows is very unique in it's sound.

"Hold. I'm here on business from the Thieves. My guildmistress has sent me to help with the loading of materials requested to bring back to Tranos in preparation for the coming war."

"Our hands and wagons are more than capable of carting our own supplies to Tranos."

"Then think of me as an escort, to the proper area to set up shop, though I prefer to carry my own weight on an expedition. Believe me, Ranger. I have better things to do, but we're in this together, and our guildmistresses are working together, and so should we. I'll tell you what. I'll pretend like I don't know where your guild halls are, and you bring the wagons around with the supplies requested by my guildmaster to yours, and we'll go together to the proper area in Tranos, and the proper route. We can even have some fun with it, and hide while carrying the cart, scaring any young ones that happen to see a cart pulling itself."

The Ranger pondered for a moment, then grinned, and nodded his head. His expression took on a slightly defeated look and he turned away.

"Wait here please."

Gardner waited for what felt like an eternity, but eventually, he heard the wagons coming to bear nearby. His senses told him that the wagons would be coming from his right, in the main forest, but he knew better. The Ranger's guild was very close by, and they would want to misdirect him, as is standard for their secret guild hall to be kept secret.

Two wagons full of fletching supplies, redwood staves, crates of pristine goose, quail and crow feathers lined the wagons. Atop each wagon was a Ranger in simple brown and green clothing, decorated as such to blend in with the forest environment. Gardner's eyesight was momentarily confused as the shifting colors of their cloaks blended in with the world around them.

"My instructions are to take the road south, west through Nirimloth, and then North to Tranos. We are not to take the path near Wintertown."

"Alright. Lead on, Dragonkin."

"Gardner is fine."

"Seth."

And without another word, the wagons set off down the path, toward the Great Northern Road and out of the forest. Gardner didn't need to hurry to keep up. He used his wings as a boost to assist in his walking, which put him on par with, if not faster than, the jarring wagons. He pointed to the left as the wagons reached the roadway. As they were breaching the trail, a kobold stood nearby, looking around at the sound coming from the forest. Just as it raised it's crossbow at the Ranger on the wagon, blood fountained out of his neck, and it toppled, dead before it hit the ground. The Rangers' eyesights were very keen and they knew what had happened, so they kept going without even a look of worry. As they made their way South, toward the intersection of Nirimloth and the road to Devardec, bloodied corpses of hostile creatures occasionally lay nearby, each one with a gashed throat and a pool of fresh blood laying near.

As they started to turn their wagons west from the large crack in the road, Gardner appeared in front of them and flew onto the cart containing the first Ranger, Seth.

"Take the Great Western Road up, and halt the wagons in the central plaza in Tranos. I'll be nearby, and will escort your carts back to Dirimloth as well, should more supplies be necessary"

The Ranger nodded once, then looked into steering the cart and didn't give Gardner a second glance. With a rush of wings, Gardner took off from the cart and flew ahead of the wagons, only to disappear in mid air.

The Ranger chuckled to himself and got the cart moving, signaling the other cartmaster to follow him as they made their way west.

"Show off."

I'm Not Missing Out Again

Post by Skirmante »

Wait! Wait! Wait! I'm almost there! Just a little more! You're not going anywhere without me!

Having rushed as far as the huge crack, Skirmante stopped. She hunched over and placed her hands on her knees as she caught her breath.

They better not have left. Is it hot, or is it just me? Please don't make me run anymore. Not for a short while at least. Maybe I should ask someone.

Not having caught as much a breath as she had thought when she attempted to ask one of the people coming from the north, she intermitently paused for breath as she spoke, "Ha.. have.. you seen.." She took a moment to inhale deeply and exhaled several seconds later. Feeling as though she had managed her breathing, she continued to ask her question at the nice woman who had stopped to answer her if she were to ever get the question out. "Have you seen a supply caravan travelling this way?"

"I had."

Breathing a sigh of relief as she wiped her brow, Skirmante asked on, "How far back would you say?"

The woman turned to look back in the direction she had come from and replied, "Well, it's already been through here." She turned back to face Skirmante and said, "You may be able to see it from here. It took a turn west."

Skirmante looked over the woman's shoulder to the west where she'd pointed. The caravan was visible, or would be if sweat hadn't been clouding her vision. She rubbed her eyes and looked again, now able to see the caravan.

Why?! If only I'd just came straight after hearing about it. Gyaaa! Looks like I'll be getting my workout in.

In a mix of excitement and frustration, she almost forgot to thank the woman, and took that as a sign that she needed to calm herself down. She collected herself and took a tremendous breath before bolting off toward the caravan.

Friendly?

Nirimloth rose with it's great trees on his right, and he could see the outline of the Wyrm Spine Mountains to his southwest, along with a great expanse of desert. He still had vision of the caravan ahead of him, and felt he had the luxury of being either in front or behind his detail without them knowing where exactly he was and had time to get to whatever threat may be lurking nearby them. He lurked behind the caravan until it rolled up and stopped to speak with the guard, and then began rolling again.

The caravan had approached Tranos's southern gates without fault or incident, which was a nice reprieve from when the caravan started out.

"Tranos Center is where you're set to arrive. I will take my leave from here. I have faith in the enhanced guard patrols that you will not run into trouble along the way."

"Appreciated for keeping the bad things from the road for us. This is precious cargo and I'm glad it's about to be in good hands."

"No problem, Seth. Enjoy the sights while you're here. The bustling city life is something that can be missed living in the forest."

Seth cracked a smirk, and then cracked the whip, ushering the caravan forward, toward the center of the city.

Gardner took flight, stepped back into the shadows, and then made his way back toward Devardec, flying toward the eastern gate of Tranos, where he would either await surprise further instructions, or until he was convinced that his services could be needed.

Greeting the Caravan

Post by Nefiris »

Nefiris had been sitting in her new office in Tranos Castle when one of her scouts had knocked on the door. The man that was standing in the corner pushed himself from the wall and went to answer. Nodding in recognition of who the scout was, the hooded man allowed entry.

The scout, not waiting for acknowledgement before speaking, moved straight for Nefiris. "The Ranger Caravan has arrived in the city." Now, he looked to Nefiris to see if he had her attention. "They are currently stopped in Tranos Center."

With a raise of a brow, "Are they now... And how long have they been there?"

"Nearing twenty minutes."

Her brow attempted to raise even higher, "Why are they there?" She stood up from the couch she had been sitting on and moved for the hall. "They should have been led to Barter Square. Is Gardner with them?"

From behind Nefiris with increasing volume the closer he got to her, "Gardner had been seen departing the caravan as they reached the southern gate."

"Ohhh?"

The two continued talking as they walked down the hallway. The sound of a clicking lock echoed down the hallway as the hooded man that remained inside the office closed the door and secured the room.

Reaching Tranos Center, Nefiris approached the caravan and greeted the Rangers, "Welcome to Tranos. I am Nefiris of the Thieves' Guild. May I ask who leads you all here this day?"

A voice came from the reigns of the caravan, "I have." The man that was attached to the voice got down from the caravan and stepped to Nefiris. "My name is Seth Proudfoot. Guildmaster Makali assigned me to lead to Tranos and back."

"It is an honor to meet you, Seth. If you and your Rangers would gather yourselves once more, I will take you the rest of the way to where we will unload your gracious supply."

Nefiris led the Rangers and their caravan to Barter Square making small talk about the trek caravan's trek from the redwood. With the merchants having been moved toward the center of the city, the square allowed room for the Rangers to set up temporary housing and storage. Rangers and Thieves proceeded to unload and organize the supplies after their arrival.

As tents were popping up around the square, Nefiris turned to Seth and offered, "Please, leave your caravan here for the night. I have arranged a room for you at one of our city's inns. We will have your caravan ready for departure in the morning, so you needn't worry about that. Take this night to relax and rest for your journey back to the redwood." Extending an arm to her side, she gestured toward a young man. "Jesken here will escort you to the inn."

"There's no need for that. I am fine 'roughing it', as they say, here among the others," Seth contested.

"Very well," she said with a smile, not intending to argue with the Ranger. "I should have known better than to make such accommodations. Forgive me," she said with an apologetic lowering of her head. "I do thank you and all of the Rangers here for making the journey to Tranos to aid us during these times." Readying herself for departure, she said, "Should you need anything, do not hesitate to ask Jesken. And please give my regards to Lady Makali upon your return," and left the square.

Seth Proudfoot turned back to his Rangers and the Thieves that had been assigned to help and began to assist them in setting up.
