Trolls in the Forest

Post by erawan »

Sitting by the waterfall outside the Rangers' Guild, an old Ranger sits as he contemplates the cast he is about to make. He furrows his brow and cocks his head to the side as he hears faint noises from the forest.

He drops his line and takes up his bow at the familiar sound of trolls growling at each other. Silently he makes his way to the din and observes a variety of trolls cutting branches and trees. Suddenly a shriek is heard and then the sound of fighting. Taking aim, he fires at one of the trolls, dropping it instantly. Adventurers swarm in and begin cutting down the trolls. A horn is heard and the trolls quickly turn and run.

Taking notice of what is laying about after the battle, he makes his way back to the Guild to inform the leadership of what transpired and his thoughts...

Today there was another battle with trolls. This time they were closer to the Guild and along the forest near Goldcroft. Unfortunately there were not many around to call in to fight, but during the fighting I observed Southbound also engaging the trolls.

I was overwhelmed once as I was not able to self heal in the non-magical area of the forest, and visited Naria. I quickly re-engaged and after time we were able to beat back the forces.

I surveyed the surrounding area and discovered numerous areas where trees have been cut down and hauled away. There are still signs of the recent battles. I will keep a look out on the area.

I appraised Shifter of the situation. I am growing concerned that these activities are are an indicator of some sort of build up of an offensive.

Today was yet another battle against Trolls. This time they made a more direct assault against the Rangers' Guild. There were three Rangers including Erawan, Sidonie, and Shifter defending the area as well as a few others within the lands. The Trolls numbers almost enabled them success, but the tactics used against them were better and caused their defeat.

Talk in a bar later, someone apparently gives an idea to somehow figure out a way to communicate with the trolls. A suggestion was made of somehow trapping or drugging a troll. Hearing of this, word is sent out to find someone whom might be able to assist with this mission.

Word has come that the Trolls have came to an agreement with the Mountain Giants for assistance in regaining that area of the forest where the Rangers Guild is.
It is believed the Mountain Giants are on good terms with the City of Goldcroft, and it would be mutually beneficial if the Rangers were forced out. This would allow for Goldcroft to expand its current holdings, and the Trolls to widen their range. It is rumored that anyone captured would become the possession of the Mountain Giants for use in their slave trade.

There have been sightings and contact made with Mountain Giant Scouts as they probe into the area.

There was a fairly heavy force of Trolls with a number of Mountain Giants invading the area around the Guild. Zavver and I were able to defend the area with a couple of others whom came to our aid.

The tactics used by our opponents was different in that they used a mass of trolls to advance and interfere, and we could not fight very effectively against the giants. Not being able to cast spells to heal ourselves caused a number of visits to Naria. We were eventually able to hold off the invaders, but it was a difficult task.

There has to be some way to deter the encroachment into the forest by these beasts, and maintain the natural balance we've held for ages.

The cooperative attacks by the Trolls and Mountain Giants had been increasing in their intensity and duration. The Mountain Giants had decided it was worth aiding the Trolls because it might have an impact on trade with Goldcroft. Ern, the Mountain Giant King had decided he had enough information based on the reports from his scouts. The Warlords had developed a tactic based on a few observations.

First, the forests were protected from magic. This would help them because the Rangers and others could not heal themselves readily in battle. Secondly, it was obvious there would not be much assistance from others. There had only been a few whom had answered the call shouted through the lands when attacks had occurred. At one time there were only a couple Rangers, another they were aided by Warriors. There was even one time when one that would hide in the shadows defended.

It was discovered that on almost every occasion there was one that would call out warning and fight with a vigor not often seen. He would move quickly through the forest, targeting the highest threat and quickly switching to the others getting close. Based on this and other aspects it was decided to put forth a massive assault with a large force of Mountain Giants. The Trolls were more than willing to be shields for the Giants. They were not the brightest bunch, but they had numbers that could overwhelm the defenders and the Mountain Giants would have an easier time dispatching them.

A two-pronged attack began almost simultaneously as a horn sounded from the Northwest followed by one from the Northeast. The largest force came from the Northeast corner of Dirimloth forest near Goldcroft. Mountain Giants roared into the forest and moved quickly past a totem pole and waterfall. Trolls moved from the Northwest and mixed in with the Giants, creating a wall of bodies crushing through the forest.

The sound of the horn was an indicator of what was to come because it was used on previous attacks. Erawan moved hastily through the Rangers Guild and passed by Seth Proudfoot whom said he would guard the guild entrance. Erawan shouted a warning to both the Ranger Guild, and as loud as he could for others as he came up against a mass of trolls and a few giants. This was the largest mass of beasts he had seen, and he took a deep breath and began engaging giants and trolls gauged by the largest threat. As the battle progressed a number of adventurers, made up almost entirely of magic users, entered Dirimloth Forest to aid as they could. There were a number of deaths, and the Immortals seeing such showed Mercy upon them.

The overwhelming force of the combination of the Trolls and Mountain Giants started to take their toll upon the defenders. Suddenly a stillness could be felt rushing over the forest itself, even as battle continued.

Within the sacred burial ground, the Spiritual Stag pawed at the ground. An increasing force tearing at the Stag as it felt the energies of the forest and the guild it is bonded with. During this the fighting continued within Dirimloth Forest and up to the Rangers' Guild. Erawan and Seth attempt to hold off the beasts as they were forced back against the Redwood.

Not a tree moved, nor an animal moved, or breeze blew in the forest. A gradual flow of energy seemed to move into the burial ground, building up and flowing to the Spiritual Stag. Suddenly, filled full of energies from the forest, the Spiritual Stag Bellowed! Across the forest a voice burned into Erawan saying, "From this day forth, you will be known as Ranger Erawan, Ranger of the Stag!" An immense force struck Erawan and he staggered a step back, Seths eyes gleaming at him. Filled with energy, Erawan charged into the mass of beasts. Seeing the vigor in him, the trolls and giants began to move back.

After dispatching many of the retreating forces, Erawan made his way to the sacred burial ground where he came across a number of magi, one whom said they were protecting the Spiritual Stag. The Stag nudged Erawan and he felt a voice in his head, "Do well Ranger Erawan, Hero to the Rangers' Guild." It then turned and troted back into the mist.
