Knight Errant's Vigil

Post by Zanza »

As the sun begins to set over Devardec, Zanza makes his way to the Knight’s chapel accompanied by his ever present canine companion Beacon. Kollin stands at the door and nods a greeting as Zanza approaches.

“Yer vigil begins now, enter and go before tha altar…” He pauses and nods towards Beacon, “an ahm afraid our friend canna join ya.”

Zanza nods and kneels down to Beacon, who tilts his head trying to figure out what's going on. “It's just for the night, stay with Kollin.”

Beacon begins to whimper and get visibly nervous as Zanza stands and enters the chapel. He turns to look at Beacon once more before his vigil begins.

“Don worry...ah’ll take care o im,” Kollin says with a nod as he closes the door.

Zanza walks slowly through the chapel, the sounds of Beacon’s whimpering starting to fade as he approaches the altar. A smile crosses his lips as he can imagine the handful his friend will be for Kollin and the other Knights. He kneels down in the chamber and takes a deep breath. He rests his hands on his knees and stares at the altar, a sword and shield resting atop it. He steadies his breathing trying to reflect on everything that's lead him to this moment.

He remembers the joy and nervousness that hit him as he walked up to the guild gates for the first time after his long leave of absence. Happy to be back, but worried about how people would react to his departure and return. There were things he had to do while he was away that he was unsure how the Knight’s would react to. The things he did were to protect his family and he ended up working with those pirates only to double cross them in the end. He was relieved when he had told his tale and found the the guild would accept him back regardless of his past. They found his deeds worthy in the end.

Closing his eyes, he could hear the bark of his favorite companion which brought a smile to his face. He remembered the time he found the adorable dog while completing a task given to him by his mentor, Kollin. Search the lands and find items that reminded him of what a Knight is and should stand for. He let loose a small chuckle thinking how such a small task has had such a profound impact on his life. Not only did he struggle to find the perfect items, but it made him think on how it reinvigorated him to become a Knight. This task was doubly important to him, because it introduced him to his lifelong, faithful companion and friend, Beacon.

He remembered his trip to Stonekeep, the friends he made while he was there. He will fondly remember the forger, Halvore, whose respect he earned by making a fine sword while he was there. The seasoned man complimented him on his work and offered him a chance to return and work with him again. If the forge was a place he ever wanted to work in, he’d surely go back and see Halvore, he’s the type of boss he’d want to work for. His new friend, Grespyan, the dwarven guard from Stone Keep. Beacon aided him in battle, saving his life, then he gave him the sword that Halvore praised so much since his own was damaged during that battle. Then there was the Knight guard that aided him from the time he entered the post in Stonekeep, Kelvian. He was hard on him when need be and made sure he knew everything he needed to while he was there. During his time in Stonekeep, he forged the sword, some horseshoes, helped rebuild stables and a few other things. One of the most important lessons he learned was that even if you are not equipped with a weapon that has a sharp point on the end, a Knight always has to be equipped with a sharp mind when it comes to a battle. Such as the time he was not in his armor, therefore, not equipped with his weapon, and a band of goblins attacked the city. He wasn’t going to jump into the fray without a weapon, however, there was something else he could do. Civilians were trying to escape the battle and an elderly couple needed his assistance. He made sure they got to safety, and in doing so was in the right spot for Beacon to help save his new friend, Grespyan.

He coughed as he reflected back on the day pirates stole some ships. He went to see what he could do. He boarded a ship with others and ended up captaining the vessel as he was the only one that had previous experience on ships. His crew of heroes was quite quick on picking up what needed to be done. They were fearless in the acts that needed to be done no matter what they were. He remembered vividly the feel of the ropes he could almost feel in his hands as he looked down at the, the sway of the ship as the waves hit the side of the hull. He didn’t realize just how much he missed the ocean till he was aboard that vessel. His past will always be a part of him, and made him happy to know that it was now aiding in his path to becoming a Knight.

Taking a deep breath Zanza opens his eyes as he comes to a realization. Even though it took him years and many detours all of his experiences molded him into the person he is today. Each of his experiences has made him into a better person in some way, giving him direction and instruction in different things, some of which others may never know, but he will have that knowledge to give aid to others if the opportunity presents itself. No one's journey takes a straight path and his convoluted path has still led him to his goal, to become a Knight

As the rays of the morning sun came through the stained glass windows, he looked up and saw the myriad of colors shining down. His vigil was over. Before he could stand the chapel doors opened and the sound of running paws echoed throughout as his companion Beacon ran towards him, jumping up on him before he could move. He laughed as Beacon attacked him with licks, Kollin laughing at the door while watching the two. Finally he stood and nodded to Kollin, “Thank you for watching over him.” Kollin smiled in response, not getting to say anything as Zanza continued. “The reflection has brought me to the conclusion that this is what I am meant to be. A Knight.”
