Dawn of a New Day

Post by Kollin Byrne »

Kollin awoke just before dawn, his wife still sleeping soundly beside him. He watched her a few moments before sliding out of bed, getting dressed, and leaving the room as quietly as he could.

He walked through the dimly lit room, stopping before the mantle over the fireplace. He smiled softly as he looked upon the first sword he had ever owned. He picked it up and ran his fingers over the warped and worn wooden sword, more a toy than a weapon, but as a child it was a rival to any of the legendary blades.

A grin crossed his face as he reminisced about the day he received it. It was one of the only times his father let him accompany him to the desert city while he took care of some unknown business. There was a tournament held by the Knights that they stopped to watch. It was the first he had heard of the Knights, but seeing them fight and compete was wilder than anything he could have imagined. When he learned the reasons they did such things, to hone their skills to better protect those who needed it, he knew what he wanted to do with his life: He was going to be a Knight. From the day his father bought him the souvenir, to the day he first entered the Knight’s guild, that sword never left his side.

He sighed with a grin as he placed the relic of his childhood back to its place of honor. No longer just a souvenir of one of his happiest days growing up, but a symbol of the start of his lifelong journey as well.

Kollin took a step back and stared for a moment longer before sneaking back into the bedroom. He picked up the Sword of the Knights, Pax Lexicon, from the side of the bed and quietly exited the house.

Unsheathing the blade he cut the air a few times, the first rays of dawn glinting off of it. He practiced his forms, getting used to the weapon so many great Knights had held before him. He grinned and shook his head as he examined the sword.

“Well Kollin, ya’ve come a long way from pickin fights with bears with a wooden sword,”
he chuckled to himself before adding, ”...hopefully.”

“Maybe don’t let them see you talking to yourself right off the bat,”
his wife laughed.

Kollin turned to see Kriztina leaning against the doorframe with a smirk on her face. He sheathed the Sword of the Knights and scratched his head absently as he walked back towards the house.

“Ah spose thas good advice...got any more?,” he grinned.

“You’ll do fine, just do what you think is right and remember you’re not alone.” She paused for a moment before adding, “So...what's the plan, Boss.”

Kollin raised an eyebrow at his smiling wife, “Boss eh?”

The two of them laughed as they entered the house together and got ready to start the day.

“Well...first ah need ta find out who’s about, an wha they need…see jus how no alone ah am,” Kollin said as he grabbed a quill and parchment before sitting at the kitchen table.

“That’s a good start,” Kriztina nodded as she put the kettle on. “Let me know if you need any help.”

“Ah will darlin, thank ya,” Kollin said staring at the parchment as he gathered his thoughts. A few moments later he began to write a message to the guild.
