A Thread Untangled, and a Hero Returned

Post by fearecia »

She’d been roaming the Moorwaine Marsh when the call went out: Anera was organizing a meeting to discuss the recent occurrences involving the rifts, the Tapestry, and the loose thread. Taking a few minutes, Fearecia finished up mapping the area she was exploring; Tashmaal would be happy to have the map, and she doubted he’d want to come this close to the Megaliths and their dark magic. A simple spell later and she was trotting down the streets of Devardec before turning to head into Koach’s bar.

Rhaegos and Anera greeted her, the young dragonkin offering her a seat. Chuckling, she declined; she was currently far more comfortable simply sitting back on her haunches. The conversation quickly resumed, with the rainbow that landed on the Monks’ guild being the current center of topics.

It was a short time later when a Priestess of Fate joined them, much to everyone’s delight. Lamaenor and Maximos were quick on her heels, the group quickly pestering the Priestess to get whatever clarity they could regarding the situation. Were the rifts and the thread connected? Unsure. Was the loose thread causing the rifts? She didn’t know. Would it be a problem if a mortal tried to catch the Thread? Probably not, so long as the mortal meant the thread no harm. Was Silk involved somehow? No, in fact, he’d been very upset over the elementals attacking them.

Onward the questions rolled, ideas bouncing around like balls on a roulette wheel. Soon, Omnicat joined them, happily taking offerings of fish from those gathered. The mighty feline assured them that Silk was well trapped, and in no way possibly involved in the current proceedings. Still, the various actions of the elementals was strange for everyone, and drew questions. Sliper eventually roamed in, looking for alcohol, but gracing them with his knowledge of the situation as a Priest of Fate.

It wasn’t long after when the Priestess of Fate looked to them all, stating that the Thread had been spotted near the Tapestry. Within moments, she, Sliper, and Omnicat all departed the bar, leaving those of other faiths behind to continue their discussion. It wasn’t long, however, before something amazing happened: a portal opened up above the Plaza, allowing people to view the Tapestry.

Spotting the portal through the open doors of the bar, almost as one the group moved, quickly entering the area around the tapestry. Lamaenor was fascinated, Anera studious, Rhaegos astounded, with Fearecia cautiously keeping out of the way and Maximos bouncing in and out of the shadows. There, before them, was Sliper, minding the Tapestry as Omnicat cautiously stalked the Enchanted Thread. The Thread seemed to be paying them all almost no nevermind, yet moved with purpose, slipping around behind the Tapestry. The great feline’s whiskers were twitching in a flurry as she slowly closed on the Thread, the scent scratching at the edges of her memory. With a paw she reached out, managing to snag the Thread a moment only to have it wiggle loose again, moving back around the front of the Tapestry. Growling to herself in irritation, Omnicat crouched lower, tail twitching furiously as she ever so slowly continued to stalk the Thread. Sniffing as she closed, the great cat’s eyes widened as she recognized the scent… and pounced! Wrapping her paw around the Thread, she gave a mighty YANK!, pulling a huge knot out of the Tapestry Thread, and tumbling an old familiar face into view.

Fearecia gasped in shock. BRIMBUR? Anera staggered about as if stunned, just as surprised to be faced with the old human before them. Rhaegos, Lamaenor, and Maximos were a little less stunned, being too young to have known the old monk in his youth.

Brimbur gave a rough shake of his head and shuddered before finally focusing on Omnicat, staring at her. “What was that for?”

“Oops!” Omnicat muttered. “Pulled too hard,” she explained, quickly offering a big sorry to Brimbur.

The old monk, spotting the shocked dragonkin, quickly reached over to give her a hug. Too surprised to do much else, Fearecia returned the hug, even as Brimbur returned his attention to Omnicat. “Why did you sneak up on me like that!?”

Feigning innocence as she doodled in the dirt, Omnicat responded, “Kitten play?” She offered him a big smile.

Brimbur seemed to accept that as reason enough. “I guess. What are all these people doing near the Tapestry?”

They were all quickly ushered out after that, returning to the Plaza so that those more attune to the needs of the Tapestry could attend to it in peace. Also, so that no one pulled an Omnicat and decided to fall into the Tapestry by “accident.” Poor Brimbur was quickly pestered by questions, but it seemed at least, some questions were answered. He was still the Hero of Fate, and had been working on the seal below Silver Rock for the last century, fighting rifts all the while. Apparently, he’d been trying to break the seal in order to free Silver Rock, but the seal was also tied to his life force, so breaking it was, well, difficult, to say the least.

The Hero led them all to Silver Rock to show them the seal, so that they might all analyze it and puzzle over the events. From Brimbur’s point of view, he’d simply been going about business; traveling to Devardec and Tranos, wandering the Monks’ Guild, and even visiting Frostfall. It didn’t take long for everyone to realize that the rifts had been occurring in the places he’d been traveling, and why there had been such strange happenings around the Monks’ Guild. Clearly, the rifts had been following him, though by accident or design, no one was sure. From Brimbur’s point of view, the rifts had only ever occurred in Silver Rock, so clearly something strange had been occurring. Now though, at least, there was some answers.

For one ebon dragonkin, it had been a very long day, but, she was elated to have an old friend back. Smiling, but exhausted, she gave Brimbur a farewell hug and returned to the Guild. Adventures aside, Tashmaal’s map wouldn’t send itself, and the recent incident with Alioik and Rhaegos had her distinctly concerned.
