The Endless Vigil

Post by Vasari »

Deep within the mystical realm of Theras stands the Pyramid of Vasari. Not built by mortal hands nor ever gazed upon by mortal eyes. Raised in a single night by the will of ‘the One’, the pyramid looms over the ancient valley it lies within. Formed from pure white stone, the oblique sides having no seam across them or any discernible entrance. The very top is capped with a golden capstone that shines and glimmers with the intensity of the sun.

Within the Pyramid, behold: Vasari.

Her slight figure, wan complexion and rheumy eyes belying the power she alone holds. Omniscience. Both curse and blessing as she sees all. Knows all. Perceiving all of creation from the most prosaic of events to the miraculous. Watching the passage of stars through the heavens through to beauty of a delicate flower blooming within Nirimloth. Her task alone remains to chronicle the history of Terris…. yet not shape it. Despite the power and the temptation to intervene – her word is iron and she remains wedded to the solemn duty.

As it was in the beginning, so it continues on in the five hundredth year. Vasari stares with sightless eyes upon Creation. Focusing momentarily upon a man rafting down a river within the Wyrm Spine Mountains…

Having lost his means of transport in the rough waters of the river, the Barbarian Tashmaal begins his long trek southward travelling a route not used for hundreds of years

He pauses, staring up at the ancient Dwarven stone carvings upon the rock walls of the Great Wyrm Spine Canyon. Venturing past the ruins of an ancient bridge, he continues southward emerging eventually into a hidden cove on the southern coast.

He stands on the grey silt of the eastern shore, a wide river blocking the way further along the cove. Staring across the bay he looks over towards the settlement in the north-western corner. A mix of huts, warehouses and even a ship pulled up onto the shoreline are packed in together there, trails of smoke hanging in the air above the town indicating that it is inhabited. His eyes come to rest upon a huge black galleon moored in the centre of the bay – the crest of a Sea Serpent visible upon a flag flying from it….

Elsewhere in the ancient Wyrm Spine range, other adventurers begin to track Tashmaal’s footprints. Pari. Kesson. Sliper… also begin the journey southward to Gallowhaven.

Vasari’s attention drifts momentarily returning to stare upon Creation. While she does not control the fate of the realm, her unique perspective offers insights denied to others. She can read the patterns of history better than any other Immortal.

In silence, she remembers not long ago, watching the destruction wrought by the Chaos Storms. In amongst the devastation left behind, a lone pirate ship was sunk at sea. While only a few mortals looked to the seas, awaiting the return of their loved ones; most did not notice or care.

However, Vasari knew that this was like a pebble beginning the landslide as the wreck eventually washed ashore on the western coast. A lone tear runs down her cheek, as she considers what is next to come.
