The Kind and Humble King of Gold

Post by Vespers »

Sometime during the night a single sheet of paper winds up posted on the door to Goldcroft's city offices.

Oh you may have heard the stories, and you may have heard the songs
that drip from tongues misled and over-bold
but I'll wager you've heard only tales of violence, grief and wrongs
concerning the noble Lord of Gold.
We've all heard the tales of slaver taking children in the night,
the orphans and the widows he has offed,
but now it's with no hesitation and with great delight
that I bring you the Ballad of the Kind and Humble Croft.

From the hands of vile Roachmill did he wrest the land away
taking scores of hungry people to his fold.
It's sure that in the forest they'd have starved in one more day
if not for the noble Lord of Gold.
And if some straggling malcontents cared nothing for the change
Crying “Now life is too comfortable and soft!”
is it any shock their circumstances quickly rearranged?
Efficient and considerate, the Kind and Humble Croft.

All who know him know that justice is his passion and his aim
that he tolerates no goods be harmed nor stoled.
It's safe as houses, walking down his streets in dark of night
thanks to our noble Lord of Gold.
And if sometimes he has gallows new erected in the square
with miscreants dangling high aloft
well that's a sign your pockets are safer than before
Without mercy is the justice of the Kind and Humble Croft.

Oh by day his merchants charge the fairest price to those in need
and by night they reacquire what they've sold
for well he knows a hundred more who's need is greater still
for the largess of the noble Lord of Gold.
And to those of you who might believe his gaze is rather shrewd
and greedy, then at you I will have scoffed.
Is it wrong for him to seek to spread his kindness 'cross the world?
A man of boundless generosity, the Kind and Humble Croft.

So stop your wagging tongs that speak of counting house and rack
Your heads should all be bowed, your hats be doffed
For the man whose greatness can't be measured by any mortal hands.
Let's have no more lies about our favorite Kind and Humble Croft!

Gladdest regards,
-Ves
