The Captain's Return

Post by Aeth »

His duties of the Captain of the Guard were fairly easy to take reigns of by others.

His reign of the fleet that he had singlehandedly built, not so much. The fleet that cast Eastward to find more able resources had been fairly successful.

It wasn't what he expected, but who could possibly anticipate a decade journey Eastward from his newfound home. Goldcroft was his home and he would have bled for his King and to show the strength of their city to the rest of the realm. Fortunately, they still had five ships to show from the dozen that he took to explore the isles in the unknown. The unknown parts of the realm were worse than anyone could expect. There would be a hundred tales to tell of their exploits. But, for now they come back to the regal city with what they had left to show.

There was no large fanfare. There was no large welcome once they returned. The "Navy" was something to be revered as they built it up what seemed ages ago. There was a little bitterness that they were not welcomed with the full celebration of the city once the scouts spotted their ships coming back from their long journey. Although, that would be a little shortsighted to believe that Lord Croft would recognize their exploits without seeing them firsthand. Perhaps, showing his spoils from that journey could be enough to show his King how much his worth really was. The men unloaded untold magical items onto the docks. Dozens of countries, cities, and smaller villages had been pillaged in the name of Croft.

But, he returned. Not to take the spoils for himself, but in the name of Lord Croft. This city of greed and lust was what he chose to be his city. This should be enough for the aging gnome to grant and audience with his King. This should be enough, because gracing the presence of Hammerguild and protecting the borders was never enough. Gold poured out of chests and more magical weapons than the land had seen in quite some time spilled from those new caches and coffers.

With a nod of his head, a half dozen men grabbed the largest chest with his offering for his King. He had barely aged in his gnomish years, but he knew time had stained this place. Nothing was quite as glorious as it appeared before, things were already almost in ruin from his keen eye. The most valuable treasures made their way, with him, towards the Keep and the old salty guards made way for the gnome to make his way back into the presence of his Lord.

Aetheron, Old Captain of the Guard, Captain of Croft's Royal Fleet.
