Unfortunate

Post by Kollin Byrne »

Kollin stood in the courtyard of Pippin Fort. The place had been lost and regained so quickly it was evident to him that once again, this was an inside job. Those supposed to be on watch, were not there. The gate captain was nowhere to be found. The alarm had not gone off, and many of the soldiers were killed in the barracks, some not even making it out of bed.

How quickly the bandits made their escape was equally troubling. They wouldn’t have been able to have made that exit and leave with all they had taken in the short window they occupied it. The loss of this fort was more than a result of sloppy or inept guards. As far as he was concerned it was proof of systemic corruption within the city guard.

Kollin stared at the hole in the corner of the wall, the city engineers already starting repairs. He had sent a squad through to attempt to follow the path of the bandits, but he wasn’t expecting much. The back of the fort ran very close to the city walls, and he assumed if he got a report, it would say they went to the sewers. Yet even with guards keeping watch on the sewer entrances, no one seemed to be able to stop anyone or see anything.

Nothing he’d done had an effect on bringing the bandits closer to justice. The realization struck that he could have done nothing and ended up with the same result, and it infuriated him.
He stared at the hole for a moment and exhaled, half chuckling: “Well Kollin, if ya wanted things ta be easy, ya’d have stayed retired in tha Landin.

He smiled softly as he thought of Abrams’ Landing and his family. He would have to make a social visit sometime, but it would have to wait. There were things that needed to be done.

He’d have to try harder.
